Console Assembly (Around the Radio)?
does that piece thats around the radio and around the controls for the A/C and heater come off without having to take apart everything from around the gear shifter and up. Does it pop out or is it held by screws or something.
pops out, just gotta mess with it by slowly pulling from the top then working it around the sides, it's held on by clips. Don't worry about putting some umph into it b/c if the clips pop off you can just pop them back on.

Don't listen to people who tell you it pops right out, they prob never took it apart. Its much easier removing it the right way.

definitely, you gotta take the center column (shifter/pocket/ebrake thing) apart to get at the "secruity screws" (used so theives cannot just rip it out even with force) 2 screws that holds the center peice in place.
You dont have to put those two screws back if you plan to take that center peice out alot. The clips hold it in place just fine. AND Im pretty sure everyone here that does screen mods and stuff doesn't have those two "security screws back" in.

01-03, remove the little pocket at the bottom and remove the screws (there are two originally, some people only put one back when they reinstall it).
04+- it's all gotta come out.
There is a DIY on here for both.

Not been funny guys, but half the explanations above are incorrect, couple are accurate though.
Remove ashtray
There is a screw behind the ashtray, remove this.
If you can feel with your hand or see up above the ashtray there is one screw to undo, thought there would be two, not sure if one missing?? Any way this holds all the metal-work that is attached to the plastic piece that we are removing.
Carefully start at the top and gently pull it away from the dash, then undo five plugs, three heating, one hazard and one ashtray and thats it.

Your answer is in the DIY.
Here's the link to the DIY

There are 2 different write ups on how to install a HU, so it depends on the year of your car. Just a take look at both. Which ever looks closest to your interior, follow that one.
