Rep Power: 265 Matching Subs Rms With Amps Rms
The Rms Is The Rated Power Of Your Amp Or What Rated Power Your Sub Should Have. You Want The Rms Of Your Amp To Be Equal To Or More Than The Rms Of You Sub(s). This Way You Can Have Clean Non Destorted Power Getting To Your Sub. Inturn Your Sub Lasts Longer. Sometimes When Your Sub Blows You Fry Your Amp. If The Rms On Your Amp Is Higher Than Your Sub It Also Lets You Turn The Gains Down So Your Amp Strains Alot Less Allowing It To Play As Clean As Possible.
Max Power Isnt Anything But A Way To Convince Someone That The Black Sonys That Are 1200 Watts Max Lol Are Good Subs!

Rep Power: 296 I Dont Really Get Why You Capitalize All Your Words, Or Why You Felt The Need To Inform Everyone Of RMS, Which Is A Basic Thing You Should Know When Purchasing Amps Or Subs.

Rep Power: 0 When your sub blows, you fry your amp? I have never seen that happen.
Anyway, it is okay to have less power going to your sub than the rms. What causes sub to blow isn't too little power, it is distortion. Some people feel that the sub isn't hitting hard enough, so they crank the volume causing the amp to work extremely hard. An amp that is being pushed all of the way will start to strain which will cause distortion and clipping. This distorting can acually cause an amp to start putting out more power than the max power rating of the amp because of the way that the unclean waves affect the signal. If you have an amp that has a power rating that is less than the power rating of the sub, the key is to send the sub as much clean signal as possible. If you have an amp with a power rating that is greater than the sub, then the key is to send enough power to match the sub's rms rating.
Also, the gain setting isn't necesarily for turning the power up and down. The point of the gain setting is to match the preamp voltage of you head unit.

Rep Power: 265 i am sorry i didnt write that this is for newbies to car audio. the point of this thread is to save the folks who are still amazed that 4awg is larger than 8awg. no offense but everyone was there at some point. but for newbies its a good idea to get a amp thats rms is above the subs rms since most people honestly shouldnt even mess with their gains. Alpine is now hiding their gains under plates and they ask that salesman not tell customers that they even have gains.
