Question: How much for a custom system?
How much do you usually pay for a nice little setup in back? Like two 12's, two amps, two capacitors, and a custom fiberglass enclosure of sorts for the subs. Then maybe some lighting to light it up? Then again, maybe just the fiberglass enclosure and the carpet would do? I could do the rest. Anyway, how much do people usually pay for something that's nice?

Hey grey.. Now you're in my house.. .. well for something quite nice and stylish.. Install and good equipment included.. around $3-5k Easy.. If you want to go very custom and such and use all top end Equipment $8-10k.. So far I have close to $8k invested in ym sound system and I do all the work myself..But for something nice,
Functional a bit Stylin.. Mostly MDF and not fiberglass.. Some Plexi a little Neon good equipment about $4k is reasonable.. Install and stuff included..
Email me at dmtp@lycos.com if you need any help/planning or looking for Car Audio Equipment and finsing discounts..
Cheers

mohawkboom is about right, fiberglass enclosures starts about $500 for basic mdf top, and all the little things add up quick, I probably have $1,500 in Monster cable alone...

Wow, 4k sounds really steep.........but after totalling up the cost for the relatively simple setup I have, it has cost me about 2k (HU, EQ, 6.5s, 6x9s, 1" tweeters, 2 amps, 1 10" sub, dampening, wiring, installation). I guess when you work on your system a little bit at a time, you don't realize how much it all costs (The same goes for others mods I suppose). Oh well, it's all for the good eh?

VNil.. Well if you have a Table saw or access to one.. Or even a good quality Circular saw then it cost about $150 to make your own.. To get an installer to do it all.. Well.. Labour starts at $25/hour and they charge you for taking all the measuremenasts and reserching what size enclosure will fit your subs best.. so For a decent Trunk install, Amps flush mounted trunk re-done in MDF.. about $7-900 depending..DIY.. 2 days $150.. My entire trunk floor is 1/2" MDF and I have a hinged door to get to my spare.. My enclosure is custom fitted to my car, Cost me $325CAD for everythign Including the Carbide Saw blade...Hope this helps.

Hum... Sounds like it's cheaper to DIY. Always is. Thanks for the information mohawkboom. I think I'll end up DIYing it. Right now I'm happy with the sound quality I get from my Pioneer Premier 3-ways. I need tweets too. I'll get those soon. Then something to replace the stock radio. Although I'm thinking of a custom computer with touch screen LCD and a SB Live sound card. Then just hook up the outputs to some amplifiers and hook those up to the speakers. After that it'll be the subs and the capacitors, and the fiberglass and what not. I have to read up on this stuff. I'm behind.
it is a good idea to stay small if u like speed...my old car was decked out wit a crazy system and i got 1st place in my first and only comp before i sold it...but now i need to save money for more stuff for the car and watch the weight too, cuz stereo gear is gonna be the biggest weight problem u will have...so all i did was cd player new front speakers and tweets..a single sub and a 5 channel amp to run it all..then i built a new floor because i raised the old one up 5 inches to where its almost level with da trunk opening so i could put stuff under there for easy removal during future race conditions

You all paid too much for your crap. I am gonna pay $2300 for a custom trunk. I am putting in 2 12" JL w'3 in the back connected to a fosgate 800.2 in a custom made box that look tight. My mids and highs are polks running off of the fosgate 400.4 amp. All will run off a 3 way crossover and 2 caps. O did I mention my crossover is mounted on one side of the trunk behind plexiglass and the caps are on the other side mounted the same way. My amps are going to be at the bottom mounted just the same with blue neons glowing on this all. Mirrors will help reflect the glow and the vinal will leave the finishing touches. The plexiglass on the box is gonna have a triangle cut on it so you can see the subs mounted at a angle. All is of course running off of monstor cable. This package is also comming with two monitors mounted in my headrests and my ps2 mounted in my glove box. Sweet deal or what.
HMMM...where to begin?????
As you have already guessed, it is alot cheaper to DIY. I installed my own system, and many others when I worked as an installer, and prices for custom work can vary GREATLY.. you can go with a very clean look with carpet covered MDF trim panels, recessed amp rack, and semi-custom box for about $500, just for the materials, and labor, 90% of your money going for labor. If you did the same set up yourself, it would cost you about $175, 3 sheets of MDF (1) 1/2 and (2) 3/4, a nice size box of screws, wood glue, spray adhesive and about 6 yds. of carpet. The next step up would be to have it covered in vinyl, or leather, and the cost jumps about $50. Fiberglass is the most expensive way to go, just because of the hours it takes to properly make anything out of the stuff. you could expect to pay not less than $1000 for a nice set up that would only cost half as much covered in carpet or vinyl. Then there is the addition of neons, and plexiglass which on average will up the price another $300 +-. I am sure that there are alot of people who can get it cheaper or through their friends, I am just being realistic with past experience of installing. I kept my system simple
Pioneer P730 headunit
2 JL component sets
JL 300/4 amp
JL 500/1 amp
2 JL 12W3
and alot of DIY time
