Alpine help from the pros

I had the 9853 installed last week, and I'm having a hard time understanding the EQ.
PROBLEM 1: I've attempted to set the EQ but the mid bass is very loud and there are practically no high's. As well as the midbass being loud it sounds similar to an AM radio.
PROBLEM 2: Is the built in crossover conflicting with the amp crossover? I also have a Directed active crossover that is currently only hooked to the subs, will hooking up the interior amp to the Directed crossover help or conflict with the built in crossover. To further complicate things, I also have an Audiocontrol Three.1 EQ. That EQ utilizes 8 volt preouts and all of the RCA's are hooked up to the Audiocontrol, so only one set of RCA's is plugged into the head unit. The RCA from the EQ is plugged into the FRONT set of pre outs from the HU. When the Audiocontrol is set at its highest setting for the Highs, it still barely has any sound coming from the tweeters.
If anyone has used the EQ/crossover in the 9853 or might be able to help, I would appreciate it!

First off, I think it might help you to understand that EQs are used primarily to fix systems that don't sound right on their own. You should try to limit the number of additional devices that you have in you system, especially active and powered devices as they will raise your noise floor and potentially hinder the performance. You should try a couiple of things in my opinion. 1. Use the defeat option on the Alpine and see how it sounds without any internal processing from the head unit. 2. Try to install your system as raw as you can - headunit, 3 preouts, passive xover for componets, amp crossovers for subs. Then add attitional EQs and xovers if you need. 3. Once you've got it about right. Take advantage of Alpine's I-Personalize tehcnology from their website www.Alpineusa.com and set up the internal settings in your hU. OR, If it's good the way it is, you can run the headunit on Defeat as I have my 9833.

Yeah, I figured the EQ could be a problem but I installed it a couple years ago to run with my stock head unit after a kenwood X815 **** out on me. I like it for the 8v preouts and the line driver, and the active crossover was only put in for the subsonic filter on the subs. Would it be better to use the graphic EQ or the parametric EQ on the HU? Also on the bottom of the stereo there is a switch for 2-way and 3-way, does this play a large role in tuning it? I have a setting configured on i-personalize but I need to rip it onto a cd and put it in the HU, will do after work.

I'm not exactly sure on the 2way or 3way, you'd have to read I'm not familar with it. But the 8volt preout might not even be good if you can't match it with an amp that has an 8v input. In Fact, I'm willing to bet it's no better than a 4v preout. I personally would try to eliminate all devices from the sytem and start from scratch.

the cause of your lack of highs could be attenuated crossover settings on the headunit. Try setting the EQ to flat and the xover to flat. If you still have an issue it's probably your external equalizers.
