I'm an idiot...blew my components
well, tonight on my way home from work, I decided to crank up the system. Turns out I forgot to turn down the gain on my 4 channel when I relocated the amp, and overpowered the woofers. My front left component blew. It started smelling really bad, and stopped playing. Tweets and the other midrange is ok. I don't have any rear speakers (well I do, but they are not hooked up), so I'm out of music till I find new speakers to put in. I don't want to deal with the warranty, since they might not even cover it, so I'm gonna go ahead and replace them. They were 6.5 polk db series. Got them for a really good price, so I didn't lose that much. It kinda sucks since I loved the way they sounded. Well, it would be great if you guys could suggest me some new components. Remember I'm on a budget, and can't afford any high end stuff like Q series, and Utopias. BTW, I know I'm an idiot, so there's no need for you guys to remind me
. BTW, my amp is 111wrms/channel, so I would like something in that range. The polks were 100w, but I guess the bass was set at around 50 hz on the mids, and that's what made them pop.

For a budget, I would suggest CDT CL-61As from www.Thezeb.com. For only $150 you can a speaker that performs like it should cost 3 times that. Either that or look into some Adire audio Kodas.

The Kodas would be a good choice, especially if you're looking to fill the midrange and upper midbass frequencies. They're $80 a set at their site.

Do you think its worth paying 50 bucks more for these than the 61As?

for that price you only get the midrange though. I'm looking at replacing the whole thing, including the tweets and crossovers. The tweeters that I have right now are too bright.

One more question for you man. I'm still not sure which ones to get, but I narrowed it down to these:
MB Quart PCE-216
Boston Acoustics SL60 6-1-2
Diamond Audio M661
JL Audio XR650-CSi 6-1-2
CDT Audio CL-61A
I can afford all of these, but just not sure which ones would sound the best. If you can think of any other in this price range, pls list them. Thanks for all your help man!

Hey man, how bout Polk Momo Comps (mmc6500)?? I can get those with my discount for under 140. You think the Quarts should sound better? Also, I can get Kappa Perfect 6.5 for about the same price (140usd).
Between the 3, which ones would you say? Promise not to bug you anymore...LOL.

Sorry, but forget the momos. Like Quarts better do I? I don't even like the momos at all. Not at all. Quarts will still blow the kappas out of the water too, although the Kappa is not a bad speaker. Feedback on the Jls, sure. THey sound a lot like Quarts. In fact, I've had the privilage of testing Jls and Quart premiums in the same test kick. I was pretty stunned at similar they sounded, almost like different lines of the same speaker. Still, the quart outperformed the JLs especially at high volumes. Also, I found the tweeter of the Jls to be little bit too much, so I'd suggest a kick install if you go that route. ONe of the best things about QUarts is the tweeters can be installed anywhere. THey are IMO the best high end speaker on the planet for a stock location install. Not only do I think you won't regret going for the QUarts, but I think You'll be like, HOLY ****!!! LOL
I'd narrow it down to the Quarts or CDT, I don't know what you get the Quarts for, but I'm sure its more than the CL-61As cost. So, make that your deciding factor. If you don't mind spending the dough, My personal opinion is the quart is far and away the best speaker up there. One of best things about quart is, they went all out to make sure that all their lines are good. Unlike some companies where only there top of line is good, quarts are good better best, but all lines are excellent.

Well, I just ordered the Quarts from Ikesound.com
Thanks for your help man. I was thinking between the quarts the perfects and the JL's, but i've never heard any of them. I'll go with your expert opinion on this. BTW, no kickpanels, I'm gonna mount them in the stock location, and just put some speaker baffles on them so they don't get damaged from moisture and such. +1 rep for you man. Thanks for all your help.

Actually Paradox, the Quarts are unique in a way that you'll probably love. They convert from a component to a coaxial. They use a removeable dust cap on the cone. once removed, you can mount the tweeter directly to the driver and have a basic coaxial design. If you decide at some point you wanna go back to seperates, pull the tweet off and mount it somehwhere else. Great system!

Hey J, we just installed Momo components in my friend's car, and those tweeters sound clean as hell. The midrange is...whatever, but the tweeter really amazed me. Do you think the Quarts are that clean or what? I guess I should wait and see. BTW, I'm not gonna use them as coaxials, I'm gonna flush mount the tweets.
Dude, if you think the highs were clean on the Polks, wait til you hear the quarts - that's all I have to say. BTW, I agree with you about the momo tweets, they aren't bad its the midbass/midrange I have a problem with.

here's the thing though, my friend w/ the momos is using an electonic crossover, so he bypasses the crossovers that came with the components. I've heard that makes it much much cleaner. He has the Momo Carbon series amp, so he can bi-amp those crossovers. My amplifier is not able to do that, so I don't know if its gonna sound as clean since I'll be using the crossovers provided with the comps. What do you think?
I am of the opinion that electronic crossovers are no cleaner than passive. In fact, I think that the noise they introduce into the system (active xovers are powered, powered devices raise a system's noise floor) along with the additional cost and complexity of install make them a poor choice for components. Electronic xovers can be good for some things, like sending low freq to a sub amp and mids and highs to a front channel amp, but not IMO for crossing over mids and highs. The xovers that you get with your speakers from the manufacturer are set to exactly what each speakers "want's" for frequency range. Nobody knows those speakers better than te manufacturer and they set those crossovers to be precise.
Oh BTW, byamping is good for some things to, but again, not IMO for momos. It's jst not worth it. Basically, IMHO a set of Quarts with their own xovers and a descent amp, would make your friend cry when he heard them next to his momos.

How do you tell if your speaker is blown?
I have the stock speakers in my EX COUPE.
just recently i noticed that the left speaker "burps" the bass. Like it sounds garbled and blurby. The tweets don't sound as crisp either.
The right side sounds crisp and regular.
Whats going on?
I tested this thoroughly by setting the fader to full left or full right. The left side definitely doesn't play the bass right and the tweeter doesnt sound as loud or clear.
Could thespeaker be blown? or maybe a pinched wire or something? whats the deal?
