16awg for mono amp and sub? ehh

what size (awg/gauge) and brand speaker wires are you guys using for your subwoofer(s)?
i went to goodguys the other day and one of the employees told me 16awg speaker wire is big enough for a mono block and sub. i looked at it and it was like a damn remote wire.

heres what the conversation seemed like:
me: im looking for some car audio monster cable speaker wire for my mono amp and subwoofer. ill probably be pushing 500 watts -+
salesman: i would recommend 16awg/gauge speaker wire
me: *looking at it and thinking, thats damn small*. 16awg looks pretty small. im looking for wires specifically just for my mono amp and subwoofer, nothing else.
salesman: monster cables man, 16awg is enough.

i know monster cables are high quality wires and such, but does this guy know what hes talking about? the 16awg monster cable i was looking at looked like remote wire imo.

if you were that salesman, what size speaker wire would you have recommend me using? (monster cables that is)

I think I'm using 12 gauge speaker wire. 16 gauge is pretty thin. Btw, just buy the generic type speaker wire. I highly doubt you'll hear any difference between 16 gauge monster cable speaker wire, and the generic brand.

My JL amp allows me to put 8 gauge speaker wire in. I probably will never use 8 gauge speaker wire though.

Keep in mind that thicker and more strands is always going to be better, There is overkill like using 1/0 guage for tweeters but you get the point, its allready been stated that the thicker the cable you have the less resistance. This is important in all aspects of 12volt.There are charts I think on www.termpro.com
But I could be wrong. I use 12 guage our bigger. I am currently using 8 guage for my one sub.
Found it here:

second one down..Hope this helps, now rep me...

Hey, im pushing JL 500/1 with 2 Kickers and im using 4 awg monster cables. It all depends on preference and budget. If you dont have the extra cash, it wont make a really big difference, put it to something more important (ex. head unit)

Feeding 1200 watts to two 12" subs I decided to use 12 gauge stinger speaker wire off my phoenix gold amp. Like its been said the bigger diameter the less resistance the more stable the power flow is to the sub.
