Fabricating a touch screen into the dash
Fabricating a touch screen into the dash
Here I go again. Project time. Lilliput 7" Screen.

I am on the fence a little about whether or not to keep the monitor controls at the bottom. It might look nice to have them there, but glassing over them would be much easier. The screen comes with a fully functional remote and to be honest, when am I really going to be using the buttons . . . Hmm. I haven't decided yet, but I think I hate indecision.

How about relocating the buttons. Drill a whole in your ***** used for the ac controls and put a button in the center of each one. Then put the other 2 buttons on either side of the Defrost and recirculate buttons (in that indented bit).
I'll draw a picture for you if it will help you understand what I'm saying.

I'll jump on the hide the buttons and go with a remote. What are the buttons for anyway. Knowing their uses might help decide if they should go or stay and ideas on where to put them. (maybe relocate the bar to above the stering wheel or attach it to the steering wheel).

keep us updated on how the screen's working.... i heard that lilliput screen can stop working after a few months. I am also in the market for a touch screen but still not sure which one to get yet.
OK, anybody could just hide the buttons. I will be the first to say keep the buttons. Besides I have a screen and no buttons and i wish I had them. Not just for fuction but also for looks. It just looks like a big empty space between the screens and the temp controls. Plus if you leave the buttons and don't like it you can always glass over. It would be a lot of difficult to go the other way. When I go to a touch screen that is what i am going to do. My 2 cents.
Cant really hide the button because how is he going to turn it on and off. PLus if he want to control with remote the sensory is built on the same board as the buttons. I say keep the button thats what i did with my lilliput. After the glare problem i just took it out and converted to indash. You will see what i mean.

J,
Personally, I'd say to keep the buttons myself. It keps the form and function of the unit to it's full capabilities. Plus, that way if you ever do decide to get a different screen, or whatever, you won't have a problem selling this one because it still holds all of the form and function like it did when it was new (minus being glassed in of corse). As for glare issues, being as you recessed yours and it's not flush with the dash front, you shouldn't have the glare issue. Flattening the screen out on it's horizontal axis, instead of letting it follow the line of the dash, would further alleviate the glare issue. The reason I say your glare isn't going to be as bad is because you're going in from the rear where others, most of the time, come in from the front, and it's not recessed as far, nor do you have the option of flattening the display out. Does any of that make sense?

Form and function is what is most pressing on me because I am that type of guy - remember how bent I was on keeping my cupholders. As far as glare is concerned, I'm not that worried. For the reasons you listed and also I've been monitoring glare for the past week by using a piece of black construction paper in the double din hole. Its never really a big issue and when sun comes in, it does so from the side windows and I plan to tint soon anyway and that'll help a little. Another big factory is, I frankly don't drive my car much during the day. I drive at night, usually on weekends we take my chick's car considering she's got assigned parking. I do like form and function especially considering I like challenges. I'm going to try it first with the buttons and then I'll cut them out If I don't like it.

what about removing the buttons and molding them in so you wouldnt have to have the "frame" for the screen but you would still have the buttons... that would look damn good... it would also be a lot of work i guess but i think it would look so friggin hot
Well I've already begun. I am planning to keep the buttons, they are glasses over in the photos but should be available from the back as they have been masked. We'll see how it goes. Heres the progress so far:
Tacking the casing in place with 2 part plastic appoxy

Again, the weapon of choice for me was bodo glass. I had so much success (not to mention left overs) with my HU relocation project, that I decided to stay with what works

PRICIVIC. That's very easy. Especially a 7 inch. You can buy the dash piece (if youre worried about fuxoring your stock one) frmo majestic honda for about $65 shipped, if I remember correctly. Easy to fabricate there.
J, Looking good, what you gonna open the hole up for the buttons with? Dremel with fine bit?
