Actually, I'm gonna cut the buttons. 3 reasons:
1. In order to keep the buttons showing through enough, the bondo/glass would have to be so thin that it's starting to jack with the smooth contours of how I want the dash to look.
2. If I move the screen forward any more, it won't be recessed at all.
3. Overall, I think it's a little too busy looking with all those useless buttons. I am going to keep the IR sensor and Some method of power on/off. Either the button itself, or a tiny hole to push the button w/ a paper clip like an eject hole on a CD ROM drive. If I get some pics in a little while of how busy looking it is, I'll thow em up.

Yup, already did this morning. I basically primed it with spot filler so I could gauge the high points - the lip was invisible in the bondo-bondo/glass-putty camoflauge. I puttied some more spots and getting ready for the final prime. Then paint.
Funny too how the flash of the camera relected off the wet primer making some wierd illusions in the lower pic.

now after looking at the pics on pg two Im kinda chuckling to myself. You created alot more worked for yourself mixing bondo and fiberglass Ill have to post pics of my dash peice its all primed wetsanded and ready for paint with a 7in exonic mobile screen
Chuckle all you want but I didn't "mix bondo and fiberglass together" the mixture comes that way. Furthermore, I didn't make ANY additional work for myself considering I needed to fill large gaps to get the contours right. Strength wise, its allways better to build up with fiberglass and cut down than to try to get just enough of a coverage area. Also, I use a pneumatic DA so the bondoglass which you see in pg 2 was reducecd to the finely shaped contours you now see in the primed pictures in a matter of say, 4 minutes. Not sure if you've ever tried to build considerably with 2 part plastic but I'll tell you this, It bonds things way way better than it forms things. And it's forming capabilities are far inferior to fiberglass or bondo. Also, products like duramix 4040 aren't nearly as strong as fiberglass and are absolutely no faster to use.
Please explain to me how you can install your Plastic tube into a caulking gun, tip it and mix it in much less time than it takes someone to mix some tiger's hair with creme hardner (about 18 seconds). Also, if you've found another way to install screens, that's great! Just put up some pics and share em with us. Hell, even suggest the way you did it and what worked for you. But don't laugh at anyone else's efforts when you don't know what the hell you are talking about.

J,
This guy's been foraging through threads trying to argue with someone. I'd be willing to wager that he's never fabricated anything in his life. Just some random stuff that's been read and passed along as myth from forum to forum like a lot of things do. Anyway, keep up the good work.

ok whatever I used to work at a shop and my brother now owns a shop and graduated from mobile dynamics. You dont have to believe me I dont care Im just trying to offer suggestions not trying to start fights. Your way is a good way to do it dont get me wrong but I have the pretty much same piece at my brothers shop that I made myself(except for a little bondo work). I didn't cut the plastic at all just removed the bezel that used to hold my head unit and my screen fit right in. I removed the plastic from the screen itself cleaned the plastic and layed it flat on the table with the frame of the screen in the position I wanted it. I used re4040(you buy a cocking gun that is specialy made for there products) and I filled in the gaps. Then I light sanded the plastic only then I had one of my brothers installers smooth it out a little with bondo and then rage gold extreme. I shot the primer with the aigun and sanded-did that twice then I used bulldog brand primer then started wetsanding and now its ready for paint.
I'll admit im far from an expert but I have picked up **** over the years mainly from my brother and installers that work for him. I have worked with bondoglass I just dont like to sand fiberglass it makes me itch all over.
I didn't think you guys would take offense to what I said so Im sorry if you did. Popcornplaya I never directed any commet towards you and you saying I havent ever fabricated anything is cool with me because Im not really into systems my brother is its just **** I picked up because he in the business and I do biuld everything that I put in my personal car and I work at the shot sometimes when they get swamped.
If you guys want me to leave the fourm just say if and Ill part my way

audio, i think this is just a case where you used poorly chosen words to express yourself. I have to admit I was even ready to say something in J's defense, until I read your last post. This type of thing happens all time here. I am sure there are no hard feeling. Lets see pics of your screen.
TheKuai, actually it's for a full fledged computer running winXp in the making. I'll keep you posted.
Audio - I'm actually a very nice guy, as you explained you werent' trying to take digs, just offer another view, I'm happy to hear what you have to say. I'd love to see your project too. You should probably take Hebegz post as the most important thing here, it was strictly the way you presented yourself. For instance, you got a buddy working hard on something but doing it the wrong way while you watch, do you burst out laughing (chuckling) or do you constructive tell him you might now of another way . . .
No big deal, just thought you were on offense there, you know. Anyway, start another post and throw up some pics of your proj, if your bro owns a shop, I'm sure the work will be banging and we'd all love to see it.
BtW, there is now possible way that you used the same screen I did and did not cut plastic to fit it, so it's kind of a moot point that I had to cut the plastic. Also, how is bulldog primer, I think I've heard good things about and if it is the brand my friend uses, I've been meaning to give it a try - I like primer with good filling properties a little bit on the light side.

yea thanks guys I did come off the wrong way and Im glad you saw through that and accepted my applogy. Im gonna take the digi to the shop today or tomorrow and start a separate thread with pics of my work and the shop car. J187 i read that you are going use the screen for a computer setup. That sounds pretty sweet. Our shop car is equiped with a mobile linx computer system(thank you mobile linx-sponsor-) and having a computer in the car is very trick. Can't wait to see some finished pics of your project
ooh sry about the bullgog my brothers partner loves the stuff but it is my first time with it . I only have experience with a couple brands of primer and the bulldog seems pretty good so far. Also there paint adhession spray for plastics is ****.

One more time for the reading impared. He's using Bondo-glass. That's bondo with fiberglass fibers mixed already. It applies and mixes like bondo with added fiber strength. Tiger hair is another name for it. Yes, laying up is strong, but for thie project it wan't necessary, plus he had some left over from teh other project, so why waste it?
Painted and just the way I wanted it. I kept the IR Sensor and the power button. I lost the pics w/ all buttons so until I find those, your just going to have to take my word for it that it looked a little busy!
