New toy for me

Yaaay my old DVD player was on the fritz so I was bumped up a line to the next model. Only thing I miss is my TV tuner which I never used anyway, so oh well

I would lllllove to do an indash mount on this thing, but without a removable faceplate I don't think it's a good idea. Won't fit in the glovebox either so looks like I have to hide this specimen under my seat again.

Hmmm, freebie? You COULD take a chance and dash mount it. . . It'd be too sad to see it , errr not see it.

Hmm... I can think of a few options. Fabbing the relocation down low. Invert mounting in the pocket near the e-brake.

having a detachable face wont stop someone from stealing the radio. There are lots of places to find face plates, ebay, mom & pop shops, etc.....just make it a double din setup!

I live in the city with the highest auto crime rate in the English speaking world

removable face wouldn't stop anybody if they were determined, but it might deter them if the deck didn't catch their eye as they walked past

WHat does your dash look like now? YOu could find a way to recess it a little and use the spring door from the 04' dash to close over it.

I am sooo tempted to just install it in there anyway, I can't hide this bad boy under the seat, it would be such a waste of a nice looking piece. Just makes me feel unsafe having it in plain view but I do park inside so that's not so bad, but I would worry alot when I am at school

Might I suggest that if you do the double din install that you put the clarion deck on the bottom, and this one on top, as you'd probably use the clarion more often and it's more easily accessed from the driver's seat and glare is reduced greatly.

I'd still fab mount that in the center console were it me, but it's not.

I'd love to get into some heavy fab work but I am lacking in

a) patience
b) time
c) the guts to do an install that will never be able to revert to stock

on another note, I don't have a problem with glare on this deck, so it's fine in either spot, although you are right it might be easier to control if its on the bottom

You could recess it a little bit under the other HU. Then, cut a thin piece of wood into a door like the snap door there, only a little bigger, and attatch the door with miniature hinges. Sand the door smooth and paint it, or even hit it with a thin coat of bondo and paint it. Then, you could open and close the door as you like. And when you were not in the car, it would just look like a cd pocket. I did a similar thing in an Oldsmobile before. Looked pretty damn clean. Took only a little while too.

Side note:
If you are afraid of fab work, do what i do, buy an extra oem pieces to work on. If you get it right, great install the new fab piece. If you don't, no worry because you only lost a few bucks and a little time. if you do get it right, once you install you can always go back to stock with the piece you just uninstalled.
I hope I was clear.

Very clear but what I don't understand is this: Wouldn't there be less waste if just fabbed the original and if it didn't work out, buy a new one? That way, you would NEVER waste anything.

You could always just install it in the dash and get a couple of "Dual" or "Craco" stickers for your windows. . . Thats the best security out there.

Seriously though, you have to install it in the dash somehow. I bet a door would work.

What I think i am going to do is make a cover for it and get some tiny magnets to stick it on. The cover I am not sure what it will be but I am thinking simply ABS. perhaps color matched to the car. Even it sticks out a few microns and is not completely flush, that's okay becuase I don't think think most people will take a second look anyway

Make sure not to put the magnets near the unit's display. You'll have blank spots on the display if you do.

the Dual/Craco stickers are a great idea. Maybe I'll get some and put small "Protected by" to the upper left of the name and shove it on my window. That should at least slow down the thief for a second or two while they laugh. Giving the cops that much more time to respond.
