Can't get a good ground for amp.
Hey. I've got a sony 600 watt 4 channel amp, and I can't seem to find a good ground for it. I've tried several places where there are already screws going into the body. I ground all of those places down to bare metal, and screwed the screw in as far as I could without breaking it, but the ground still doesn't seem good. The amp acts sort of funny...sometimes, the amp will come on, and everything works great, but then I'll start driving and it cuts off. Or, it will turn on, and then I'll shut the car off, and start it up again, but the amp won't cut on. I know I've made a good connection for the amp turn on, so I don't think that's it...but then again, I really don't know. So, what do you guys think? Does it sound like a ground issue, or something fishy with the turn-on lead? Thanks.
ok...listen to this. I got out my multimeter and tested the terminals on the amp. The amp is getting power, because connecting to the 12volt constant and the ground produces 12 volts. So, I tried connecting a larger gauge wire to the remote turn on at the head unit, and still nothing. I checked all the fuses, and they're all fine. The only thing I can figure is that there is something wrong with the amp itself. For some reason the amp isn't getting the power from the turn on lead. Any ideas? Thanks
I found the problem... The amp WAS on, but I couldn't see the light from my angle, and the sub wasn't working because one of the speaker wires had come loose. So, problem solved, but I was wondering...why does everyone knock Sony? I don't know a whole lot about the quality differences between the different brands, but I know Sony isn't exactly at the top of the list. However, I got the amp for $100, whereas it costs at least 150 elsewhere, and I'm not powering a huge system anyway. So, what is it about sony that everybody hates? Just curious...
-if youre hearing from the ppl whom said it sux, at least 90% have never test them. theyre just jumping on the bandwagon.
-there are certain ppl dont even know how to set it up and tune it right.
-sony is good enough to jam w/. thats all i gotta say.

Sony used to make good equipment, in the early to mid 90's, when they weren't trying to do everything across the audio spectrum. Their HU's used to actually be decent. The more recent stuff is built using mediocre materials, and pretty much, by the cheapest means possible. This is in order to ensure the highest profit margin. It's alaso a brand that has long been synonymous with budget friendly. They don't make a lot of high end stuff, because 90% of the time, audio consumers are looking for value over performance. From using the old stuff, then trying to use their new stuff when installing for other people, I can tell you from experiance that the quality isn't there like it used to be. Guess they started worrying about them selves, and tried to cover too wide a spectrum to keep the quality. Thing is, though, they know people will continue to buy their brand to at least try, just for the name, whether they have had an experiance with their car audio product or not, because of previous experiance with their brand from another format )ie. video camera, digital media, home electronics, etc.). They have a good reputation in other formats is why their brand is still able to cross over into car audio, and be successful, from a business sense.
