Red substance from battery?

I was looking under my hood and saw some werid red stuff on my battery on both the negative and positive. I quickly wiped it off and it was like blood red colored. Anyone know what is going on?

tbaleno is an unknown quantity at this point
did you get your transmission fluid changed lately? I can't think of too many red things it could be. was it confined only to the terminals or was it on other parts of the battery?

you sure you didn't accidentally cut yourself while fixing your car and you dripped blood there?
anyways, on the serious note, don't think there are any red liquid stuff around the engine bay... just wipe off.

It was anti-corrosion stuff. Keeps the battery terminals from corroding. You should have left it on.

corrosion would be white and green paste like stuff.

the red stuff keeps the air off the terminals, thus blocking the corrosion.

go to an auto parts store, buy some more, smear it on, cover the posts and metal clamps completely. The spray on type (looks like yellow clear coat) works well too.

yea, corrosion's not red..
but wow, its pretty nice if they help put the anti-corrosion stuff when you change oil..

wait.. then don't they have to disconnect the battery? if you still have your stock deck, then wouldn't u need to punch in the numbers?

oh and to explain.

corrosion needs the acid and oxegen to corrode the terminals. if the terminals are shielded from air, they cannot corrode. so anything that keeps the air off will do this. the red stuff is a commercial battery terminal spray. I use the krylon batterys spray which looks like yellow clear coat, dries quick and dry, and people don't tend to wipe it off.

Some ideas. baking soda cleans up corrosion, but don't get it into the battery. In a pinch, Sprite will dissolve the corrosion and let the car start if you have a stuck/dead situation. axle grease, vaseline, etc, will do the same thing. Prevent air from reacting with the acid

having a car die just from the terminals corroding is a waste. just an ounce of prevention!
