JL subs
JL subs
Alright, I'm torn between two different JL subs. The overall sound I'm going for in my car is SQ yet can get some good SPL readings. My options are: 2 JL 10w6s or one 10w7. I have an Orion 250r that puts out 800 watts at 1ohm. With the 2 W6s, I can push 400 watts to each speaker, which is the 'optimal' power handling for the subs. Or if I go with the W7, the sub will be getting roughly 600 watts at 1.5 ohms, which is near 'optimal' power handling.
What do you guys think the best setup would be? Trunk space is an issue because I hall my drums around and I cannot take out my spare due to the 1 hour commute each day to work. When I called my local JL dealer, one W6 goes for $368 and I didn't price the W7, but I'm figuring one W7 is close to the price of two W6s.

the W6v2 is a really nice sub i would get it over the w7 because the W6v2 is a really good sub and much cheaper then the w7. if your worried about trunk space 2 W6v2 need a fairly large box to get the max quality of the speaker. i would mabey suggest one 12" instead of 2 10" just to save trunk space.
actually, I just looked up the specs for 1 10jlw6 and it calls for a box less than 1 cubic foot. So two 10s wouldn't really take up that much space. As for 10" vs 12" sub... 12" subs are too sloppy for me. I listen to a lot music with fast/punchy bass drums.
I would recommend the w6's for two reasons. i predict they would get louder compared to a single w7, and since they dont have strange surrounds and are more shallow, you will have more grill options and ways to protect them so you can huck your drum set back in there without having to worry about puncturing a speaker.
good luck!
I dont knot know current pricing, but retail on a single 10w7 two years ago was $750
edit: and $350 online

ya i was thinking height vs lenght of the box. with the 2 10's it will take up almost the whole width of your trunk. and im sure they need alot identical depth. with the 12 u can bulid it up higher instead of takin up the width of your trunk which allows u to put stuff beside the box. because wont be placing objects ontop i dont think,. but if the 12 isnt tight enought for you then i guess it doesnt matter. i would still stick with the W6v2 tho
if your primary concern is the box taking up space:
check out the DIY for the spare tire enclosure box, then search for ways to relocate the spare tire under the car.
once you've checked out the poor method of building a spare tire well box, probbaly half a dozen people here can start explaining the diffreences between that spare tire well enclosure and a real nice one, thatll fit a pair of 10w6v2's, only take up about three inches of your floor, and let you toss your drumset into the trunk without a second thought on damaging equipment.
even better, if you have AAA< you can decide not to worry about relocating the spare. its a bit of a pain anyways.

I would like to know how to build a nice tire well enclosure also.
However, I think I'm going to wall off the trunk from the interior. Now my next question is... Should I have the subs firing into the cabin or out towards the trunk? I'm not sure if firing in towards the cabin will be too much bass.

Would it be a bad idea to buy the 10w6s through ebay? I found a pair for $570/shipping included through a dealer with 99.1% raiting. This would save me about $200 dollars through a store.

If you decide to actually mechanically seal the trunk from the cabin, be prepared to do a crapload of work! dont forget between the frame of the car and the skin behind the interior trunk panneling (it goes all the way through to the cabin!) and the rear deck. youll have a blast with the rear deck

but just making it all cosmetic can look absolutely fantastic, and youll still get all the bass the speakers are capable of producing.
of course I have no pictures uploaded and a computer thats dismantled that contains all my photos. *sigh*
the best way I know of so far to build a spare tire enclosure is similar to the DIY, but with one major difference:
the DIY instructions leave your subwoofers exposed to the trunk, you cant just toss any old crap in there! even if you set it gingerly down, gotta worry about it flaling over onto the speakers while driving.... that sucks!
now imagine if you framed around the speaker, say 16x16 inches around a single 12 inch speaker with 1x1's. then you put your floorboad on top of that instead! well, youd have your bass and you can throw stuff on top too!
the only thing after that are variations on the design. I like to use fiberglass in my tub like the "need a BOX" thread. check it out, its got pics of a spare tire well box thats show oriented rather than stealth oriented. its another good desing, nothing will ever fall onto your subwoofer! anyways, the point of this paragraph is that you can glass the well rather than build an MDF box for it.
another variation I always take advantage of is rather than building a frame of 1x1's around the speaker, I leave tons of room and use 2x3's or 1x3's. then I have space to install the amplifiers under there as well.
A variation I like to think I conceptualized (though Im sure its been done before) is a 100% stealth installed spare tire well box with an invert mounted idmax. box took forever, but the results are beautiful.
you are limited only by your creativity when it comes to spare tire well enclosures, stealth or show or both, and in this case, a stealthy spare tire well enclosure would definitely let you have your cake and eat it too!
ill try to get pictures uploaded when I can, but with my other computer taken apart and in storage at this time, I cant make promises. maybe after the new year, when we will all be actually starting new projects

What I will probably do is remove my rear 6x9s so there is more air flow to the cabin. I will go with the cosmetic seal with the subs firing out and the amps visible with the rear seats down. If I'm not mistaken, Fonto has the same setup.
White, the box I'm making is going to be sealed. Now I've seen them built two ways. One being an open chamber for both sub woofers. The other being, each subwoofer has it's own chamber. Is there positives/negatives for both setups?

I've got some good ideas about how to do that too, when you are ready and buildingas to shared airspace or seperate airspace, here's my take.
whether its two cubes sealed or one cube PER woofer sealed, either way each speaker responds to one cubic foot of air space. Sonically, performance is exactly the same.
using a divider first and foremost, braces the box. if youve got a box that flexes a bit, or is poorly reinforced, then seperate airspaces might give you a "tighter" sound based soley on the fact the box sides might no longer be flexing during high volume play, for example. so thats one advantage.
another is when you blow a woofer. if you blow only one of your subwoofers in a shared chamber box, then the other woofer will act like its in a 2 cubic foot very very very poorly designed aperiodic enclosure. often in situations like these the remaining good woofer doesnt last long! its certainly easier to over drive the speaker.
In a shared chamber box, if one blows, you lose half your volume, but the quality of sound is identical.
the question you have to ask yourself is, do I really plan on blowing a woofer?
in my own car, I never have seperate airspaces. I brace my boxes tightly and pretend Im not gonna blow up equipment.
other guys here swear by seperate airspace, and good for them. if it works for them, then it works for them. their way isnt better than my way, and my way sure as hell isnt better than theirs!
so itll have to be a choice you make, which way you go, and im sure there are other advantages/disadvantages im missing others will pipe in.
seperate chambers are harder to build, comparitively.....
um.....

i have One W7 10" it sound amazing, i would recomend the W7 over the W6's especially if they aren't V2's. The W7 not only sounds amazing but looks incredible when playing the amount of reach on it is insane and the notes it can reach are crazy as well, my pick....W7
