can't be THAT hard if you have some good knowledge of electrical and whatever... hardest part will be installing and wiring hte brain, but how hard can it possibly be???
Just buy it and do it, that way there is no turning back
I'm not sure if there are any units out there with LCD/DVD that don't have an external brain but if you want simplicity maybe thats something you want to look into

Eclipse makes and All-in-one unit with no external brain. It's model number is AVN2454. I believe it is comparable to the AVIC-N1, in that is comes with included navigation. The difference in it and the AVIC-N1 are various, the major difference being that it is a double-din unit as opposed to being a motorized TV. A downside of the Eclipse unit -vs- the AVIC is that it doesn't have the capability to multi task as well. It can play AM/FM and CD's while navigation is operating, but, it can not play DVD's while the nav is running. In order to operate DVD's while running nav, you'd need a secondary system. One good thing about Eclipse's unit is that it is double din, so it wouldn't interfere with the ac vents.

The Clarion VRX745VD is an all in one unit. Pretty cheap too, $1400 at Crutchfield so I'm sure you could find it for less. No Nav., but you didnt say anything about Navigation.
Its pretty easy to install one with a seperate unit though, you just have to wire the harness like normal and run it to the trunk (along with a din cable) and then mount the brain somewhere. Just like running RCAs and mounting an amp!
