component speakers Alpine vs. JL
Hello, I want to get some new 6.5" components for my fronts for my 01 civic LX coupe. I've narrowed it down to a handfull of possibilities and would like to know what all you experts here think.
I'm considering:
Alpine SPS-171a
Alpine SPR-176a
JL Audio XR650-csi
JL Audio VR650-csi
Also, does anyone here have experience with these speakers and how the fit and installation is on our cars? Thanks!

I have VR650s in my '04, and I had to make a spacer out of MDF for it. I also cut some plastic out of the door panel just in case. Other than that, I didn't need to make any special modifications for the woofer (e.g. no cutting metal). For the tweeter, I just surface mounted it on the sail panel (the plastic piece behind the side mirror). I'd rather have properly mounted it nearer the woofer, but it is a leased car, and I'd like the option to return it if possible...
EDIT: Oh, and I like the speakers quite a lot. I listen to just about everything (jazz, opera, classical, alternative/rock, hip hop, lots of electronic music), and they seem to handle the variety well. I don't have a whole lot to compare them to, though.
Oh, and one more thing: I used some Fatmat-type stuff (something generic) and did a very thorough job in the driver's side door, then slacked off a bit on the passenger's side door. I now get bad rattles ini the passenger's side door. So I would recommend doing a thorough job of Fatmatting...

Brash - - - you cut the plastic on the doors of your lease? Thats great! I know they'll never know, its funny.
drcivic - - - I've only heard the VRs like Brash has and the SPR Alpine. I like the VRs a lot, I relate those JL speakers to Quarts a little bit. The SPRs I heard did not impress me at all. They really seemed to play too high for me. From the two I've heard, I'll tell you the VRs had it all over the alpines. But some things to consider would be price and power. How much can you get each for and what power are you giving them.

I figure they aren't going to open everything up and inspect it, just make sure things work properly. And I may just end up buying it... it's a good car.

Did you have to make spacers or did the JL's come with them to make it fit? Thanks.
