Which direction to face the subs
What's the sounds difference and ADVANTAGE when you throw your sub facing the rear seat. I've seen custom trunks like this? Than again how does the qaulity of sound differ, what's the ADNVANTAGE when the subs face to the trunk or from sides to middle? Pics with examples up soon.

I've tried subs facing me, I've always liked magnets facing me better..
not sure about technical advantages, im just going to wut i can tell by ear..

when i had my 2 12" in a bandpass enclosure, i'd leave the subs facing OUTWARD as in away from me. whats even better is when i put it right next to the trunk (closer to the rear), the bass would vibrate harder and more.
putting your rear seat down is also an good idea.

when the subs face the trunk the sound waves have something to bounce off of increasing the frequency and therefore increasing the spl(sound pressure level) and the SQ(sound quality) the closer to the trunk the more the soundwaves compress making more sweet bass

Better yet, build a wall!
I say to each his own for the speaker direction, I have seen guys hit very high numbers in SPL and guys with stellar SQ setups fire their subs right into the passenger area from the back seat, but if you are facing them the other way and want good SPL, you will get the loudest with your box pushed all the way to the back of the trunk to ensure you have as little cancellation as possible.

Generally speaking (again, this is a blanket statement) in our cars, the majority of the time, subs sound the best when placed approximately 6 inches from the trunk lid, facing the rear. This is because bass is omnidirectional, and it is bounced off of the trunk lid, so to speak. Again, you can face them anyway and make them sound good, it's best to just try every possible position you can think of, and determine what sounds best to you. With my new box, mine are actually firing into the rear corners of the trunk (well, that's the direction they point towards, even though the subs fire back into the box).

ya so I turned mine around and faced it into the seats. Sounded like ****, couldn't even tell, there was any bass. Than i thought i would put the set down, and everything and its mother rattled like F. so I put it back the way I always do, face it towards the lid.

It isnt just random. There is since involved. I've posted this before in actual AUDIO forums. if you're going for strictly SPL you have to take measurements from your subs position to the front windshield then figure out the distance of the wavelength you're tuning your sub to......blah blah blah. I'm sure if you are serious enough about SPL you can go from here and search you can figure out the rest.
Doesnt matter whcih way you face them if you're not going for SPL. Just build, test, rebuild/reposition and test again. Takes a while but you'll get it.

my friend has 6 Digital Designs "Beasts" (the 18" versions) in an '89 Dodge work van...6 H.O. alternators under the hood, 36 amps, and 36 Optima Yellow Tops push it real close to 170 dBs...Dynamat didn't really help, so the doors and floor are filled with concrete, and all the windows are Lexan with steel strips riveted through them for support...good $hit...

I'm going to use an easy example here. When you go to a concert, and you're in the room with the artists, you can hear everything (low, mid, and high frequencies). When you step out of the room, especially if they have doors that close the room in, what do you hear, or feel rather. You won't hear the highs, but you can hear/feel the low frequencies. This is because of the way bass travels as opposed to the way higher frequencies travel. High are more directional than lows, which means that they don't bounce off of objects like bass would. This is about the simplest explaination I can think of. True, in SPL applications, it's about raw power, and moving air as much as possible. You might want to create a more direct path from the front to the rear of the vehicle. Personally, I could care less about SPL. I prefer spine tingling, mind numbing response from my equipment. Not something that's going to rattle the car to pieces because of the high pressurization of the sound. Most of the people that get equipment today care more about SPL because they want people outside the car to hear it. I didn't buy my stuff for some bum walking down the street to enjoy, I bought it for me.

Well I bought my equipment for SPL because I actually compete in SPL, in fact I rarely have it turned up loud when driving around unless it is on the freeway

My guess is it depends on the box (ported, vent ported, sealed) and i've messed around with all options...and to my conclusion i've decided on the subs facing UP towards the trunk (mind you my box is ported down the middle) and it hits the hardest like that...plus my license frame doesnt rattle as much.....but like i said i've experimented with facing the subs toward the inside of the car, facing out toward the trunk and i think the best sound comes from facing the subs UP. its just my opinion...but it sounds good to me!
