Re: DIY: Head unit install

Hi there!
Have the same problem with head unit, 1st I was yust pulling it out - didn t know that there are any bolts didn t work. Today tried to get it out trought glovebox- same. Then decided to google it , so here I m
I m from Latvia and there are may be five or six EM2 Coupes so no info how to DIY.
Some of the words you all write I dont understand and when i look in dictionary it translates into something wierd, so please corect me if I understood wrong:

To remove the front panel where the CD player and heat;flow;AC;rear window heater controls are I have to remove that silver ring around shift ****, then pull a little to get cigarette lighter out. Then I should have acess to 2 bolts, remoove bolts and then push from behind a little and then yust pull it out in front?

Car is Em2 coupe 2001 manual made in USA

Almost, but not quite. You don't just remove the silver ring, you remove the entire flat black piece that the silver piece is attached to. By pushing down on your shift boot (the material around the shifter), you can feel plastic pieces that you should pull up on. This is the first thing you do, then do the rest.

Re: DIY: Head unit install

so far so good. -did everything including removing the two screws, but the head unit still won't budge. i'll keep pushing harder or try pulling more from the front.

What's the little black box in there marked 'HONDA ABS'? - it's plugged in a wire, the wire is taped to a second wire leading to the cigarette lighter?
that for brakes or stereo?

Re: DIY: Head unit install

The pods are very tight the first time out, try to get top or bottom first and then keep working it. Avoid using prying tools if possible. I had to push from behind using the metal bracket. Very tight.

Can't say on the box could be ABS plastic ?? (coded for recycling)

Re: DIY: Head unit install

Got it out! i'm so proud of myself.
now i'm just confused about what kind of adapter/wiring/harness i need to connect to my ipod headphone jack. i tried taking a picture of the back of my stereo. anything look right? do i plug an adapter into the existing port on the left or use the already existing wires on the right?

the second picture is the little black box that says 'honda abs'. the wire on its left is for the cigarette lighter. still can't figure out what it is though.

thanks

Yaaaaaaaaa, you lost me too. I had you while you were trying to get the stereo out but once you mentioned the iPod you lost me. You can't plug an iPod into a stereo with no inputs bro.

Re: DIY: Head unit install

oh, so you do still have the stock deck. you cant really do anything with that thing.

i wouldnt even bother with any of that man. it looks like you would have to buy both the harness and the bigger unit too.

you can get a really nice aftermarket deck that has an ipod connecting wire coming out of it, right off of ebay for the same as what you would spend doing this whole thing. you also will be able to add rca cables if you want to add a sound system, you can change all your audio settings, etc etc. you can do so much more with it for the same price, it performs way better, and it looks way nicer.

heres an example. this is the exact one i have in my car. its very nice, has a lot of features, and you can change the displays and stuff on it. its black and silver with blue display lighting. it comes with a wire that plugs right in the back and comes out that you plug right into your ipod. you can control your itunes music right on the deck too so you dont have to mess with the small ipod.

Hey, very sorry about the problem with the images, it has been a very long time since I've visited the forum, and I also just realized that I let my web hosting lapse which would be the reason for the images not displaying. I've just renewed with them, the images should be back shortly, I'm not sure if we will have to wait for DNS or not, but I've checked the FTP, the files are still there.

Re: DIY: Head unit install

Thanks buddy. Actually turns out I didnt need any of that. Once I sat down in my car and started working, it was all pretty intuitive. My '03 civic coupe didn't require removing the entire center console which was pleasant. Only took a couple hours from start to finish. I love my new head unit Next project is hooking my radar up to my fuse box.

Re: DIY: Head unit install

Mega - great job on the pics! I just purchased an '05 civic EX SE coupe (used) yesterday. This radio has the aux jack - convenient, but I hate wires showing...so I wanted to pop the radio out to see the connectors in the back. With your help I was able to get it out in 10 minutes! Thanks again...

Now, back to the issue at hand - finding an adapter unit which will plug into the only connector on the radio but provide an additional connector to run an ipod (nano) such that you can use the radio buttons to control and charge the ipod.

If such an animal exists, I'd be curious to see other's installation ideas.
Thanks!
KC

Re: DIY: Head unit install

yeah its just a honda cd-changer aux plug for the back of the radio, converted to an ipod input. they sell those all over. wait does the SE radio have two connectors? one with the main harness and then an empty smaller one for adding cd changer?

Re: DIY: Head unit install

Nope. The blue connector is the only one. Logjam believes that connector operates the cd changer - but in the SE the changer is integral to the head unit...so I'm not sure. I suppose I could pull the connector and see if the HU still operates.

Assuming it does, I too have seen several versions of an adapter - just wondering if anyone on this board can share some experiences/opinions of hardware they've tried.

Re: DIY: Head unit install

Unfortunately, as expected, removing the blue connector renders the HU powerless...also reminded me put the radio code someplace where I could find it easy.

But I thought I recall seeing (somewhere) an adapter that runs between the vehicle harness and the radio...any ideas?

These directions show the way in which you have to push to get the head unit out. Step 4 on page 3 of 6 show where to push.

Thought I would help!

Re: DIY: Head unit install

im working on it. i have the factory DX stereo receiver with changer port (the tape and cd deck will also work if you have either of those), and they all have an extra plug in the back for cd changer add-on. you can get an ipod adapter that hooks into the honda port and then plugs to the ipod changing port (not the headphone jack). this gives much better cd quality sound than other conversions. you can see which one i bought here. should have it installed next weekend. this converter charges the ipod, outputs a digital signal to the radio and speakers, and also allows you to control the ipod using the oem stereo cd changer controls (press cd/tape button to switch to the ipod, then use volume, disc+ and disc- to move thru songs and adjust volume). basically it turns the ipod into a cd changer where you have 5 "discs" which are actually playlists you make in the ipod.

sound quality will not be very good with those cheap aux addons, believe me ive tried em. very low volume and poor quality worse than radio.

Re: DIY: Head unit install

Very helpful DIY. I was a bit confused about all the talk on removing the center console. I just pulled on the cigarette lighter area and that piece came out and I was able to remove the HU as normal without even moving the center console. This was on an '03 DX Manual.

Only downside was after getting it all apart, I found my new HU wont plug into the wiring kit I bought. I won't solder anything because I don't have a plug of the right size to go into the new HU. My wiring kit plugs right into the car just fine, making the connection into the new HU is the tricky part. Does anyone have any advice on the wiring harness? My best guess right now is go in to a parts store, show them my plugs and ask what fits.

Edit: I have no wiring on the new HU except for what is already sticking out of it (RCA plugs - not used currently). If I should, I must have left it in my old car when selling it :-/
