i have a question about the dash kit, i just got the top portion as to keep the pocket, but when you slide the piece to fit behind it works fine, but the top piece is to small and doesnt fit around the headunit to fit in place, was it just the wrong size? i ordered the metra 99-7897 honda civic 2001 dash kit, but it doesnt fit why not?

You can run your iPod with your stock headunit, and control it using the stock headunit. As for what you'd need to complete the install, other than the DIY here, would be the following:
Wiring harness
Dash Kit
Method of connecting wires (crimp on connectors, or solder and soldering iron coupled with heat shrink tubing)
Optional zip ties
The tools listed in the DIY.

There should be a gap about 1/8 inch, maybe less around the faceplate. Just enough to give it room to function. That's what you want, it to be tight around it, but not so tight as not to let it function.
