For those with large boxes

How do you get your spare tire out or do you even care about it? What do you plan to do if you ever get a flat? Have you ever gotten a flat since you disabled access to your spare? How much of a pain in the *** is it to not be able to use it, how much does it worry you in your head that you might get a flat somewhere remote and be screwed?

Enough questions for you?

Personally, my box isn't big enough to contend with the spare. However, I've been in the position before. Basically, you could always figure a way to have a set of tools to remove the box in the event of a flat. You could also just get AAA and just plan to wait. I had an olds with 2 15s in a monster enclosure in the back. I dind't like not having trunk space, but I never had a problem with the spare. I just used AAA the 2 times I got a flat. Also, my best suggestion is if you have a huge enlosure keep a can of Fix-a-flat in your trunk at all times. If you happen to get a small hole in the tire somewhere, fix a flat will hook you up til you get where you need to go. It works pretty well. All in all, don't think about the spare tire dude, think about the BASS! You're an SPL guy, spare tire shouldn't even be in your vocabulary, lol. At least you'll have good sound while you wait for AAA.

But I can get my spare tire out now while hitting some okay numbers with a sensible installation that still has some cosmetic appeal. I was thinking about over the winter rebuilding box but I would STILL like to get my spare tire out, but I guess I will have to try and work around it... I could make a really WIDE and tall but shallow box and maybe even do a trunk shock DIY to get some extra height, and then put my amps on either side of my trunk and make a matching panel that goes in the middle to get the tire out. Better yet, I could try and rig something out of metal to move the spare tire forward a little bit so I could make my box deeper. Then I could make a cover for my spare tire and put some tools in there for show. Better yet, I could make a large cover for the spare tire well, still with 2 seperate panels on each side, and inside that cover, make a circular shaped cutout that I could carpet and put back in and take it out for shows and have just the tool kit showing through without all the ugliness of the spare tire well surrounding it. OR I could forget about the tools and put like distro blocks, line drivers, etc in there. Man that would be cool, I think I am really cooking with gas now!!!

Sorry I get a little out of control

My box is pretty large but small enough that the spare tire can be carefully manuevered out. I don't really worry since my spare can be used and I have AAA for that anyway. If I drove in an area that has tons of cracked pavement, pot holes, and broken glass all over on a daily basis - then I might think it's a pain to get my spare out - since I don't drive anywhere like that on a regular basis I'm not too worried

Or I could make it one solid piece with the circular cutout in the middle and have it on hinges so the spare tire comes out easily and have no seams from having 3 different panels across my trunk. and then I could mount my amp behind the spare tire recessed from the false floor under plexi maybe with a logo cut out of the plexi to help the amp with cooling. Doing that wouldn't affect my idea with the sapre tire, i could just put everything on molexes to make it easily disconnect

I think I'm gonna be busy this winter

That's kind of what I described in my rant...

Where else could I relocate it other than forward?

Hmmm I suppose I could always leave the spare tire in the stock location and just mount the amp towards the back of the car instead, it's a bit wider anyway back there so if I wanted to mount a long amp such as a 22" long PG Xenon 1200.1 it might be a little easier. I could even make some neat little legs to swing out and hold up the false floor... sweet

I had mine relocated under the car when I had the spare well glassed in. It was on the cable like on most trucks now a days. I bought the assembly off a wrecked truck in a salvage yard. The only thing that sucked was finding the turn mechanism at night behind the body kit bumper (it was vertical as opposed to horizontalls installed so the tool was sticking straight up and down into it (barely had enough room to get the tool in between it and the ground)as opposed to on a horizontal plane. Well worth it though for what I used it for (and I never had to actually use the spare when it was relocated).

this thread makes me think of fellow Niagara region Gen7 member, Brian (whitecivic2k2) and his 150 pound JL sub enclosure. i'll have to ask him next time i see him what he's done with his spare.

I saw a picture earlier tonight of a 7 gen trunk where he located the spare tire towards the back of the car more, so I know it can be done, the question is just how. It would be uber easy to get out too, I think I just have to work on my engineering a little bit...

Hmmm, can the spare stand upright in the trunk? You could always make a nice spare tire cover and mount the tire TO the box standing up straight. You know with a nice cover like on the back of a CRV.

sevenplaces is on a distinguished road
well, for me what I did was get a rear strut bar and some universal tie down straps. I ran the straps around the strut bar and through the floor of the trunk and around my box. The setup looks pretty nice and to get my box out all I have to do is loosen the straps. Makes it easy to get to the spare or to empty my trunk if I need to do so. Another idea is to get 2 individual boxes and mount them in the back corners or the trunk (by the taillights) then build a hatch over the spare. Thats what I am gonna eventually do I think.

I have no room and only take it on trips. When I do take it, I put it right behind my seat on the floor. Oh, and I'd wrap a shirt around it first.

yeah that's what i was thinking first, but I drive like a 1/2 hour down the freeway every day for work and school, so that's a fair bit of a trip on it's own and I'd hate to be stranded but I think my odds are pretty good, I don't see how there could be a nail right in the middle of the freeway that would find it's way into my tire. I do want to research an alternative to having to get at my spare tire in it's factory location though becuase once i figure that out my install possibilities are endless

I still like my continental kit idea

Or maybe I could mount it under my hood, cut the hood out and create a fiberglass cowl to give a really mean look

Some of us have extremely heavy boxes with even more electronics screwed to the side weighing it down even more

and J187, do they make Z rated run flats?

Z rated tires are for 149MPH +....waste of money on a car that cant go above 130 downhill with a strong backwind.

I havent had a spare tire for a year and a half...only time it bothered me was when we drove 6 hours to montreal, so I just put one in the backseat under a bag.

Yeah that's what I was thinking of doing too.

It would still be nice to have access to the spare whenver I wanted it, I'm an advocate for keeping my car 100% functional as it was from the factory.
