Let's play "You tell me what to get"
Ok, I need a new deck. w00t. gearbox predicted it. Anyway, here's what I want, and you guys can throw out recommendations. Ready?
1. Manually adjustable EQ. None of that preset "Rock/Pop/Flat" crap. If it has that, it's fine, as long as it ALSO has a manually adjustable one.
2. Sub output.
3. .mp3/burnt cd compatibility
3.5 (.mp3 track title display is a definately plus, but not required)
4. Crossover
5. No flashy crap. I don't want my deck to play F&F-esque movies as a screen saver. I don't want it to flash distracting things. I want it to display the time, sound specs, or song info while it is playing. And it has to have a clock mode. I don't know if they make ones that don't, I'm just making sure.
6. I don't want to pay a lot
7. ***** that you turn to adjust volume and sound are preferrable to buttons that you have to press "up up up up up up up up" to turn the volume up or whatever.
8. I don't really care about 4V ouputs or whatever because my speakers aren't amped.
And then, would you recommend buying a deck online or not? I'm talking from an online vendor, not like a used one off eBay or something. But they seem to be about 60-70% of retail price online.
I was looking at this one by Pioneer that did all that, but I can't remember the model number. Let me try to find it.
Thanks

Oh, one more thing. It has to not skip. I don't know if they even make car CD players that aren't skip-proof anymore, but I don't want mine to skip.

Hmm...
Anyone have any that are under $300?
I got a Pioneer 740 for 237 shipped a while back. a little flashy though. A 8600 or maybe a Clarion 545mp or 645mp would be good too.

Is Clarion good? I've heard mixed things about them.
Stay away from Sony, right?
For ones that are flashy, like that Pioneer one, can you turn the flashiness off so it just displays track name and time or whatever?

Most pioneers have a text only display. That's what I use on mine, even tho I could look at movies, graphics, and other stuff
Have you checked eclipse?

Have you checked eclipse?
I ended up spending much more on my system then I ever thought I would - now after I've spent the money I'm so happy I did - it just sounds great~! and all those extras that you may not think count actually make a big difference. I would go for an Eclipse HU - I have the 5444 - it retails for about $500 - maybe less from your local dealer - mine was around $450 or lower - not sure I forgot. Anyway you could probably get away with the 3434 or the 3424. I would look into them as they're great! The Alpine units Megahurtz recommended are great and you should really consider them. I mean - though your spending more money here and there but in the long run you'll be happy with the investment - it's just that - getting something better and more on the higher end is more like an investment than a piece of electronic equipment. Getting something better now (expecially HU) will give you flexibility in the future for things you may want to add and such. Having a HU that will accomodate anything you want add is a big plus and you should consider it when you search for a new deck - getting something that will do what you want now may not be able to add expandibility for the future - just a though - just tihnk about it - good luck with the search - look at the eclipse decks - they're great!

I spent $540 on my deck and I love it every day. Don't get something stupid and then start thinking about getting a better one again
Get something you'll keep for a long time.
Get something you'll keep for a long time. Wait a minute, didn't he follow the post about spending under 300 by saying he found a pioneer for 320??? Dude, buy the 9835 or 9833. You'll get more than 400 worth of headunit. The 9833 is perfect if you are concerned with how much you spend cause the ONLY difference between the two is the BioLite display. the display on the 33 matches the civic dash pretty well.

Ok, enough of this 40$ ****! get 9831 for around 280! Happy? I don't care the v-drive and **** cuz I got my amp build, if you really care about 9833 hu, then listen to MEGA, his words is only going to make you not to be regreted in the future, eventho I think the same, even the hu is like 100$ more than I expected I would still go for it if thats sure gonna keep me satisfied for long time, I just hate/f**k changing all these and that in short term and spending more n more on old/new ****, I can save those time/money to do other things that make my life better, got the point? Don't mean to be offensive, but just listen and you got yourself happy in futer too when you come back to see the post again!

it's kinda funny.
