an equilizer allows you to iron out frequency peaks in your car to smooth out the response.
or it may let you tune on the fly, in case that song you like hte bass line to, you can bring it out a little more, without making the cymbals or the guitar deafening or speaker killing in volume level.

I love and hate EQ's at the same time - I can never seem to get it right, especially with my Eclipse 5444 - theres too much EQ to deal with - it's a choice between easy mode with a 2 band EQ (bass and treble) or advanced/pro mode with a gigantic EQ (I believe 13 band - not sure the exact #), time correction, Xovers - The bigger the EQ the better - more to tweak but it sounds that much better when everything's right
