Driving a stock looking car is a great deterrent. Don't bump your system around where you live (especially if you park outside), or within a few miles of where you plan to park the car. Alarms are worthless - Save your money. Keep everything in your interior stock looking. If you're not building a competition grade system, avoid kicks for example. Make sure all wiring is hidden. And the best thing you can do - build a fake faceplate out of your factory deck to put on when you leave the car. No one's going to break into your car if there's "nothing" to steal.

How do I figure? Well, pop the hood open and cut your battery cable. Alarms are only effective IF you've got the backup battery, you have multiple sirens, the brain is WAY hidden, your hood is chained shut, and a billion other factors. After all that, it still just slows them down. All of this still assumes that anyone in your neighborhood (or wherever your car happens to be parked) gives a crap that a car alarm is going off. Chances are if your alarm is going off at 3AM, your neighbors wake up and hope your stuff is getting stolen just so the thieves will disable your alarm permanently.
I've had an alarm for years, by the way. Just so you don't think I wish I had one and that's why I'm being negative towards them.
I stand by my statement that the only way to not get your stuff jacked is to make it look like you don't have anything - this includes not showing off to "friends".

I installed two sirens (one of which is an air horn) and strobes under the front lip when the alarm goes off. I know in AZ the auto insurance WILL cover your stereo. A friend just had his Alpine IVA-D900 and some PPI gear replaced. I've even offered to take photos down to State Farm to keep on file and they tell me I don't need to. Also, some insurance companies will only cover it if its bolted down to factory screw hole locations. So if you put 90 drywall screws through your floor you might have a fight on your hands.
