Rep Power: 788 Pioneer is a great deck, but that one's a bit on the cheap side. Are you sure you don't want to spend a little more and get one that has more features? You can save tons of money by doing installs yourself. All it takes is learning how the car comes apart and running the wires for amps and stuff.
Carmedia1.com is a great place to look for cheap, quality audio.
Here's my setup to give you an idea. It cost alot, but mostly because I didn't learn to install stuff right away. The internet is your friend.
-Pioneer DEH-P940 MP3 deck
-Infinity 1020W 10 inch sub
-MTX mono digital amp
-Alpine four channel amp
-Infinity 652I 6.5 inch speakers
-Infinity tweeters
-Monster cable wiring

What are you looking for in a HU? I am of the opinion that you get what you need (want), not what has the most features. Since you have a $1k budget, I'd recommend the following monetary ranges for parts:
HU: ~$200
Front components: ~$150 - $200
Amp for fronts: ~$150 - $200
Sub: ~$100
Amp for sub: ~$150 - $200
Wiring, etc.: ~$50 - $75
That will run you close to $1k. Buy on the higher end of the ranges if you plan on doing the install yourself (good experience!), or on the lower end if you plan on having a shop install for you.
What you should do is go onto Ebay (or something like http://www.cardomain.com if you don't want to buy off Ebay), and compile a list of stuff that is in your range. Try searching for the stuff on Google to see what people think of the specific parts, and ask here as well.
