Is Dual Voice Coil Worth It?

In your opinion is the extra $$ for a dual voice coil sub worth it? I'm looking to get either two 10" Rockford P21054 or one 10" Rockfoard P310D4 - they both add to almost the same price. I wanted 12s but I just don't have the $$. In your guys opinion which will sound better?

it depends. with dvc's you need a lot more power to push them but they are usually better.

an amp can power it easier if its a dvc sub, for example a amp that can only put out 160 watts at 4 ohms can put out 250 watts at 2 ohms. just make sure you have a 2 ohm stable amp.

A dvc sub given the same power as a svc should sound exactly the same. The only reason for DVC subs is to allow flexibility in wiring. If your amp is only good for 4 ohms mono, then you'll want to get a sub that you can wire to 4 ohms.

yup

It's worth it. My sub is quad coil. So I can hook mine up in 1.4 ohms.

wait until you have money for 12's. They will be worth it. DVC or SVC doesn't matter a whole lot performance wise.

SVC vs DVC is for wiring purposes. It has no effect on sound.

What muddies the waters here is that your not only comparing SVC to DVC, your comparing a P2 sub to a P3 sub.

Generally speaking they consider the added volume achieved from adding a second woofer equal to the volume of doubling the power to a woofer. That being said, having two 400 watt subs, or one 800 watt sub, should equal each other out.

I couldn't find the specs to compute the theoretical output for each case. Take the xmax and multiply by the cone area to find the total woofer displacement. I know with JL, that one w3 is equal to 1.5 w0's. If the P2 and P3 models compare about the same, then the two P2 woofers should be about the same as 1.5 P3 woofers. I'd think the two P2 woofers will be just a bit louder that the single P3.

DVC is a configuration thing, not a sound or power thing... if you need dual voice coils to help with the wiring for application, then get DVC, if you don't, then get SVC. There is no other difference between the 2.

Also, in my experience, DVC were always the same price as SVC... where were you looking? Are you sure that both subs were from the same line?

The SVC is the P2 line (400 watts max), while the DVC is the P3 line (800 watts max). Like I said before, its not a fair comparison because the subs aren't the same line.

Its like saying do I want to get two JLw0's or one JLw3. The w3 is a better woofer, but the two w0's would have slightly more output. Theoretically a w3 is equal to about 1.5 w0's. At least it was for the 8" ones like I have in my truck.

I don't know much about Rockford's line but I now realize that I can't really compare the two subs. I'll look into the line a little bit more. I'ts looking like I'll be going with the SVC though.

I don't have an amp yet. At the moment I have nothing yet. My civic is totally stock at the moment. I was just looking for some suggestions so I dont drop $$$ on something I don't necessarily need. As far as the amp goes though - how much power is enough and what's too little? Thanks for the input!

I think what you need to do, is go to a shop and listen to some different sub/amp combos with your own music and see what you like.

re xxx or re mt?

regardless, the quad coil xxx and the dvc xxx are identical in sound, specs, loudness, etc. it just allows you to hook up more amps to it without strapping the amp. the quad coil version is made specifically for competitors.

for daily driving you wont notice a difference

rockford fosgate has always offered 2 subs that SEEM to be the same, the only difference being the dvc, but its actually 2 different models of sub.

before it was the he & he2 or the hx & hx2

if you take other models of sub out there available in single and dual voice coil variation, you wont notice a damn difference in the two.

its actually fosgate's fault that people have the disillusion that dvc is like 2 subs in one.
lets say you have sub x, 2 inch coil, 4 layers of winding:
svc sub, all 4 layers are wired the same terminals
dvc sub, 1st and 3rd layer wired to coil 1, 2nd and 4th wired to coil 2

in fosgate's situation, (not specifilly these numbers, just an example) it would be a 2 layer coil as the he, and a 4 layer as the he2

in the guy up there who said he's got a quad coil, if its the xxx, i think its an 8 layer, so same thing, 1,2,3,4,1,2,3,4
more layers allow for more power handling and such
