Right now I have two Pioneer 10" subs in a custom sub box. I want to take them out, and cut two holes on my trunk floor and drop my subs in there. I have a few questions before I try this...

1) Will the two 10" subs fit with the spare tire still in there, or will I have to take the spare tire out?

2) How much sound quality will I be losing by facing the subs up?

3) Do I have to enclose the subs in some kind of box or can they just be sittin in the floor?

4) On my custom sub box, I have a positive & negative wires going from my amp to my sub box for each sub. How will I do this without the sub box, can I hook these positive & negative wires straight to the sub?

You need to build a custom trunk box...

There was a DIY on the site when it was still the old version, but if you search you might be able to find it somewhere.

It says on there exactly what you need to do to build a trunk box for a 7g vic.

Unfortunately, you will have to remove your spare tire though.

save space, make a stealth install, to look cool, there are lots of reasons to make a false floor!

you dont need ot take out the spare, but itll be tricky cramming all that stuff in there if you chose to keep it. pulling it out makes it ten times easier on your to install it.

you dont lose any sound quality by upfiring.

they definitely definitely have ot be enclosed if you want it to sound good. definitely!

and theres plenty of space for a pair of 10's. Nick got over 3 cubic feet from his spare tire well removing the spare! you should be able to find plenty of space, even keeping the spare where it is.

the woofer may not be playing to 100% of its abilities, but according to basic wave theory, that would be rear firing with teh box about 5 inches away form the trunk lid, who does that, anyways?

as long as we cna get most of the performance of htat with the box pushed back, we do that, right?

same thing here. sounds great, right? so it doesnt need to play at 100% of its ability.

from a sound quality persoective, tuning will cure any issue concerning upfiring in our cars. works great!

Thanks for all the input. I'm trying to gain as much knowledge as possible about building a false floor. At the moment, I'm not quite sure how I could pull this together, as you guys make it seem like its a piece of cake. WhiteRabbit, I see that you made a DIY on building a false floor, but it seems as if all the pictures are broken. If you still have those, I would definitely want to see them.

I really really wanna do this so keep posting as every post helps, thanks!

OK i actually did this (ill try to get some pics with my cell phone tomorrow)

The project itself was quite easy. I just took out the cardboard insert from my trunk and put it on a big piece of 3/4in plywood. I then traced that and cut it out. Then i used the stencil that came with my sub (an Infinity Perfect 12) and cut out the hole in the middle. Then i used a program called WinIsd to determine the specs of the box that I need to make underneath that. Once i got the measurement to go with teh amount of cubic space i needed i then measured the bottom of my new floor to the bottom of the trunk and then adjusted my box measurements to fit accordingly. Then i built the box attached it with screws and attached it to the bottom of my new floor using screws. i fit the new floor into my car to chek the fit and it was ALLLLLLLL GOOOOODDD. I then removed the floor once again and undid the screws and hten applied liquid nails to all the joints of the box and to its place onthe floor. Then i re did all the screws and let the liquid nails dry for a day. then i went and did all the seams with clear bathroom silicon. I then installed my sub and my just placed my amp on top. do a search fo carpeting a box to see how to carpet the floor

VARIATIONS
you can build a hole for your amp and a fan and a piece of fiberglass into the floor pretty easily.


PROS
1.every person i showed my install too thought it looked super cool and had never seen anything like it.
2.it looked cool
3. Bass sounded deeper and you could really feel it in your feet.

CONS
1. The sub didnt hit as hard as it did in the pre=fab box i got with it even though the box built in the floor was made to Infinity specs.

possible causes for the cons:
I may have messed up when i changed the box specs to fit my trunk (not likely)
There is all metal under the floor and a lot of etra space maybe the acoustics are horrible and a few layers of dynamat/brownbear/whatever will deaden it and make it better.


edit: by nto as hard i mean not as loud. some bass notes were deeper but it didnt get as loud and couldnt be heard from as far away.

How do I know how much airspace I need for my two subs. I have two Pioneer 10" subs. Also, I see that you made the box airtight with liquid nails and silicon, but when you attach it to the new floor, do you use this stuff too to make it airtight at the points where the box meets the floor? I hope when I attempt mine its easy as you say it is!


ALSO: How would there be enough room to put my 2 10's and leaving the spare in there?

possible cause for the con: winISD probbaly calculated a .707 QTC alignment, and your box was calculated to be bigger than your prefab box, increasing accuracy and sound quality at the sacrifice of boomy output that cna be heard far away.

the basic premise for fitting two 10's AND the spare is that you would have to raise the height of the floor. while this technically eliminates usable trunk space, its still a heck of alot mroe functional than a "real" subwoofer box that takes up half the space but sits ON the floor!

4.1 Cubic feet/ 2 Diamond TDX-104's tuned with a slot port to 35Hz. Powered by a JL 500/1. With the moonroof open it looks like the sunvisors are waving at me. Pretty loud.


Oh and the spare tire is going under the car.
