bass fading
Here is my problem: My sound system various in bass and loudness frequently. I tried putting in a capactior (with the LED readout that rarely goes below 12.5v) which greatly improved it when it is sounding good, but for the times it is sounding bad it doesn't help much. I don't know much about how the system is wired but its a 600W amp pushing a 10"Boston Generator sub, Infinity Kappa 6x9's, and stock front speakers. The car has around 80k on it. The sound can vary depending on my throttle position, mainly it sounds the best at idle.
I'm assuming my alternator i having a hard time keeping up. Please tell me if you think this is an amp issue. If it is an alternator issue, does anyone know where I can get a higher amperage alternator (2001 DX)?

Mine was doing the exact same thing. I think the stock battery got drained too many times. I would have really terrible bass sometimes-almost like nothing with the levels turned way up, but then it would come back after some freeway driving.
Anyway, I got an optima yellow top group 51 battery and no problems ever since. No cap, either. Now also if you have dynamat or other sound deadener, it will vary with the seasons. The material performs best at 65 degrees I think, so my bass is always louder in the summer evening. Also, the car comes stock with some deadening material that helps out a little. But try the battery.

Gearbox,
Definitely sounds like the same problem. How hard was it to put that battery in? What is the "group 51" designation for? Do I need a mounting kit or something? Thanks for the help.

Battery is a perfect match. I actually did a thread about it with pics. Just make sure you get the one with the terminals the right way. I got the reverse one and had to switch all the cables around.
