this is a repost due to being posted in the wrong area at first ill get it right sooner or later

last two post from other forum topic were directed at the head unit, internal amp as the culprit gremlin

stereo help! please! no tunes!!!!


I have a kenwood system that is in need of some help please
heres what I got
kenwood deck excelon 617
kenwood components mids and highs in the doors with x overs
kenwood excelon 6x9 3 ways in the rear deck
(1) 10" JL audio sub w3 6 ohm
pushing the fronts and rears is a
5 chanel kenwood 90w x4 with the sub left off
for the sub
amp is kenwood 800w 2 chanel bridged about 450rms
let me know if ya need more info on watts and model #s

I have had problems with amps both being repaird for out put
(I think)
but both should be in working order now.
the sub amp has been in storage untill today to test the rest of the system

the first symptoms were the volume started to cut out at 35 (full blast) then a little by little it would cut out at lower levels 25, 20, 19 13 ect, until nothing at all. all of this over a two week period
my first guess was the head unit. had it taken in for a look see.
they said it was fine, good output. lost 20 bucks there !@#$#$%^&
went home and decided to hook up the sub amp to see if it plays just the inside of the cab
it barley plays at full blast (35) but has a nasty bump when you turn it off
you guys please help me if you know whats wrong. I dont want to give this stereo guy any more $$$$ than I have to and it is starting to make me sick with all the cash I have in it already. is this comon to have to replace or repair stereo equip every 2 years dident used to be that way Im old school I guess.
what are some good head units. I know alpine and eclips are good but I like a little flash and bells for my money.

Could be many things. Is everything cutting out or just part (subs, fronts rears, etc)?

Personally I dunno how reliable Kenwood is. I probably wouldn't ever buy thier stuff. But thats just me.

One possible issue I see right off the bat is the sub amp. Most amps are only 4 ohm stable when bridged. With that sub your going to be running at 3 ohms. This may or may not be the cause of the sub cutting out. Running at 3 ohms causes the amp to draw more current and put out more power than its designed for. When this happens it can overheat the amp sending it into protection. This may be what the issue is w/ the sub.

If everything is cutting out then that points to the HU. If the system as a whole is using too much power, then the HU remote voltage might be dropping enough so that the amps keep kicking off. I wouldn't think the system would be using that much power. Many have run much more than that. I'd think maybe the battery or the altenator is going bad.
