Box mounting/securing

What are some good way that I can mount and secure my box, doing as little drilling as possible? It would be nice to be able to remove it to get my spare tire out if at all possible.

Any crafty advice and solutions are appreciated, thanks.

Feel free to make any other comments as well.

what are your box dimensions?

i guess putting one screw into the floor is out of the question, if you want easy removal

Well I would like it to be secure as possible, so that thieves won't be able to rip it out

If I recall correctly, my box measures 20" deep, 28" wide and 12" high with the amp mounted on the side.

It will fit between the rear wheelwells just fine, so the only variable is how far forward or back to mount it to get it secured the way I want.

if you push it all teh way back, would you still be able to slide out the trunk floor from under hte box if it were secured down and get the spare out?

then id put a screw into the box anyways. push the box all teh way back, with the carpet in place, and put two screws through the box into the trunk floor. make sure you dont hit anything vital!

then simply put the subwoofers back into the box, and it isnt going anywhere!

I would like to avoid drilling into my trunk floor if at all possible (don't want rust)... got any other suggestions?

i sprayed the underside of the trunk (where i saw the screwhead sticking out) with rubberized undercoating.

you could use a zinc spraypaint if you wanted, too.

not perfect, but its not like as is is rustproof, either!

I originally asked how deep the box was becuase I was thinking you could screw it to the back seats, but your box is too thick so it wouldnt clear when you wanted to fold the seats down. oh well.

what about a mounting bracket bolted to the seats? like a piece of wood screwed to an L bracket screwed to the rear seats. that would prevent the box from sliding side to side, would clear the cabin/trunk boundary when folding dfown the seats, you wouldnt have to worry about the box sliding while braking, and do you have problems with box sliding while accelerating? if so, you could tie a rubberband or a striung or something removable between each leg of the side supports to prevent rear sliding.

you should not be putting a box in your trunk if your worried about the spair tire or holes in floor, stick to your stock system...

I'm not worried about it, god forbid that I want my car to be FUNCTIONAL and NOT RUST.

Perhaps I just know what I am doing when it comes to installing a system?

Well what is on my mind right now is getting everything bolted down with minimal drilling, and if possible, no drilling thru my trunk.

What I just thought of is that I might be able to drill and put screws through in the same area as the carpet hold down things are. But what I need to know is if I screw thru in this area, does it go to underneath the car, or will it be in a sealed space?

where's that guy from? i remember Canadian Tire flyers often had a red RSX that looked just like that and had the same audio setup. does the RSX have graphics of stars on the side of the car?

I bought some small L-brackets and screwed one side into the cardboard thing that separates the trunk from the spare tire. I made them into a square so that my sub box would fit snugly into them. It's not hard mounted into the car, but the box doesn't slide around at all.

only prob i see with mounting the box to the thin floor board is in time the holes r going to ware and get bigger,, then you have to drill new holes but cant cuz the area around the screw or bolt gets all ripped apart since that stuff is like cardboard...what i would do is take a trip to HOMEDEPOT and buy yourself a half sheet of MDF board 1/2"....

take out you trunk floor and trace the pattern on to your 1/2 and cut it out...also while your at HD make sure to buy set of hinges an some 3M 90 spray glue...basicly duplicate the floor but with a thicker wood for more support...for the carpet you can find that stuff any where, try a good net surch for speaker box carpet...or some thing of that sort...

Now you can take out the woofers out of the box and set the box where you want it....put a few 1" screws iniside the box through the floor...this way you cant see how the box actualy is mounted or stays in place.....put the woofers in and that box will never move again...

yes it does have stars on it, thats APC car...youll find it on there web site with tons of other cars that i have done for them

completely off topic, but i never miss an oportunity to exclaim how much I detest doing things the proper way. They all too often breed incompetance if the alternative is to ignore proper protocols.

there is nothing wrong with doing things the "wrong" way. whats more important is longevity and reliability of the solution.

guy, you are pretty nuts about rust! unless you live like on the east coast or something, its not THAT big a deal!

as far as the L brackets, just pull teh sub out and put a screw through the box! its less noticible that way.

both methods will put a hole through the floor all the way to the outside of the vehicle. then just spray some rubberized undercoating on it,. you can get it for a buck fifty form walmart. no more worries abotu rust!

we dont salt our roads as often as some snowy cities but vancouver does get quite a bit of rain

rust is still enough of an issue that we should take the proper precautions to prevent it.

then coat it. youll never have a problem.

if you really want, go to your hardware store and purchase a zinc paint, they come in spraypaint cans in teh paint section, usually called rust or corrosion prefventatives. thatll also protect your car.

rust IS that big of a deal

If you just spend 20 grand on a car, would YOU want the trunk rusting out?

no. thats why I coated any spots where I broke the factory coating.

even though I live in california, where ill never have to worry abotu rusting through, I coated it.

Ive coated my car with many different kinds of barrier coatings to prevent any kind of corrosion.

coatings can prevent corrosion.

putting a screw through your trunk floor can cause an initiation point for corrosion, but can be slowed through coatings.

coatings can prevent corrosion.

if youd like to keep your box from sliding around with 100% surety, coat the bottom of your car where the screw comes through, to prrevent corrosion.

ooh, now that I think about it, in any of the posts I have made in this thread concerning corrosion, have I yet to mention that you can coat the metal to prevent corrosion? if not, look into that, I hear that coatings can reduce and prevent corrosion!

one ...droping some screws through the box into the floor board does not mean that you are going to pop out through the bottm of the body, if you really think about it...under the nicely carpeted floor brd is this ugly ****ing thing call a donut (spare tire) and that would be the first thing you would have to go though in order to pop through the body ....you have at least a good 5 in before that happens..

And two doing things the proper way (right way) does led to longevity and reliability of the solution. Like i said if you take your time do it right, in the futur you wont have to go back and do it again....so ya it is important you do it right, ....

you woudnt want to to hear that from honda after they survise your can now would you

Forget all that so called "factory-trim" stuff. Overrated. At the end of this project, you'll open my trunk to a flat false floor and the post for the spare is getting welded under the car (DIY on this site somewhere. But honestly, for your situation you can bolt to the sides too, those support brackets will hold it as well. Might need to build some MDF pieces to extend to that point but hey, we don't have musclecars. I'm sure you don't need a military approved support bracket. Try some stuff out. People on the West coast may not understand the cancer that is rust, but car manufacturers have come a long ways in rust prevention since the rust old Malibus you see driving around town. Oh, and please tell me you got that car for under 20K. Seacrest Out.
