Alarms - Alpine vs. DEI - Thoughts?
Hey Guys
I am looking at getting an alarm soon.
I have been looking at the Alpine Alarms but a buddy of mine said the DEI alarms arent bad either.
I am still liking the Alpine Alarms, as a buddy of mine has one and it works awesome.
Just looking for opinions.
Thanks

I have the Alpine SEC-150R and it works fine but I would say stick to DEI since they have more features and have been doing the alarm thing for a long time. Autopage is also a good company.
DEI units are definatly solid but i would stay away from the 690XV, the responder unit. I've installed a couple of those units and after a couple months the 2 way stopped working. 1 guy is on his 3rd unit. Other then that I would say DEI all the way. From an installation and programming aspect you'll love the DEI. Alpine needs to stick with audio because the programming on their units is horrible and i have replaced way more alpine units because of problems then DEI and we sell 10x the amount of DEI.
-all the first generation responder unit should be stay away in general. i notice on some of the remote, inside of it, the solder doesnt stay on too well and it doesnt make the connection so it stop working.
-i wouldnt say 100% to stay aways from cause some of my friends had luck w/ it. its all about the installations, most of the time, the unit is just as worst as ur intallers.
-when youre looking for alarm unit, ask yourself..... what exactly do i need?
-most ppl just go for the remote and dont even use all the options that comes along w/. good shoppers aways look around and ask questions.

I am not looking for any high end features. I just want good security for my car so it doesnt get broken into and / or stolen.
I want to make sure my car is safe at all times thats all.
My only objection to the DEI units is that almost every store sells them and everyone has them, plus I have seen them and they just seem cheap looking.
I know Alpine has a solid background in Mobile Audio and from some of the research I have done, most people prefer the Alpine alarms as well as they are not that common, I like to be different too ...... he he.
Thanks for the replys so far guys.

It's all really a personal preference, I used to install DEI alarms everyday and I like them, but as someone else said, it is all in the install. If you're not looking for something too fancy, I would go with the DEI Python 660XP.
2 Solid 4 Button remotes, Dualgaurd Shocksensor, Trunk/Hood sensor inputs. If you get this thing wired in correctly, it would be extremely hard for a theif to get into your car without setting it off (Unless you leave your windows open or something to that effect)
The unit is also upgradeable to a 2-way pager unit if you find that is something you want to do in the future, and has tons of possible remote outputs, mine activates my neons, I installed on on my wheelchair bound uncle's handicap van which opens his doors, lowers his ramp, raises the ramp, and closes his doors, all form his 4 button remote. Plus, DEI has one helluva garuntuee and warranty. Like someone said before, it is all in the alarm install. The best 2-way unit installed horrible wont stand a chance against the worst Apliine alarm with a good install.
Just my $.02

what he said ^^^^^ now a days you gotta get a pager type system. no one really pays attention if car alarms go off anymore, since people always tend to set their own off, so having a pager system is a more sure fire way to just be that much more sure that your car is safe. also a few companies are working on gps controlled alarms systems that should be out in a few months. they will be awsome and only about 75 bucks more and plus like a 100 buck lifetime watching fee(so a company can know where your car is). i think i heard also that most of the systems come with lowjack which is included in your cost. these systems are good since you can tell when your car is getting messed with even if you are halfway around the planet rather than a pager being able to work up to about 1/2 mile in most cases.

Personally I like the Clifford line of Alarms that DEI makes. The Clifford alarms can be interfaced with a laptop via the Cliffnet software and cable, and the features can be programmed (such as customizable siren, inputs, outputs, etc).....But all car alarms have such a huge @ss markup on them, which sucks because I don't want to pay to have someone install it for me, as I can do it myself (and have done so in the past).

The old White pagers break easily, but the new Black ones are pimp as hell and tougher. The old ones break because one board is just floating ontop of another circuit board held on my a few micro solder points, I used to install these and were replacing the old white ones everyday!

I have the Alpine system also and I love it, I got a DEI pager hooked up with it so that was nice, but I have had no problems in the 2 years I have had the system, it takes a bit to program but it is a one time thing.
