Need some box building help

I call apon all you smart box building people to help me out. I am going to be looking to build my own box. I need help with the dimension and everything and have it be able to fit in my trunk. I have 3 JL 12W6's. I know they need atleast 1.25 cubic feet for a sealed enclosure. I will probably be using 1" MDF secured with screws and then liquid nail to seal the joints.

Would someone be able to help me out with figure out measurements of everything I need for the proper cubic footage? Please keep in mind that it will need to fit in the trunk of my 02 EX Coupe. I thank you all in advance for any help offered.

JL provide's box specs n their site. they also have their boxes prefabbed that hold up to 3 subs, and they provide the measurements for them too. see if they will fit in your trunk.

Also, you can use 3/4 MDF, 1" isnt necessary.

I have already checked the pre-fabs from JL and none of them will fit. they are about 4 inches to wide, which is why I am going to build my own. I also checked the manual and they have boxes set for one sub and they said to just double or triple the measurments for as many subs as you have, well if I did that the box would be like 49 inches wide, which is way too big. I was thinking about trying the 3/4 MDF, I mean if need be I will go that route and just add in some extra braces.

its very difficult to spec large boxes that fit in cars to hold that number of woofers that can fit.

the largest box i have been able to fit in our cars was about 5 cubic feet, adn the wya it was built, there was no way to fit three 12's on one plane.

I think your best bet is to build two separate boxes, like this civic, one 1.25 cubes internal, and one 2.5 cubes internal.

I like the White rabbit Idea, two boxes. Ludlam, I dont know what to say bro except DAMN!!! Thats one big box in the back of the vic. I used to have a 6 foot enclosure in my Explorer.

Any know how to figure out the dimensions of the box so I can start getting the wood together and everything?

yes, two dimensions are locked, always.

usually its length and height, ensuring a constant baffle size. then the box is built wide enough to get the neccesary airspace.

however, you have more design considerations. #1, will it fit through the hatch? thats #1 consideration. make a box so tall itd fit in the trunk and touch the floor and the rear deck, and it would fit IN the trunk, but could you get it through the hatch? heck no! so youll have to design it so that its tall enough to fit a 12" subwoofer, but not too long that you cant get it in there. then youll have ot make sure that you can fit the little box in with the big one in there, and weasel everything inot place after.

itll take some juggling, but the only thing thats really certain i that the box will be about a minimum of 13 inches tall, to fit the speakers!

you can also upfire teh speaekrs, in that fashion fonto fit four 1.25 cube boxes in his car all upfiring.

with some creativity, you might be able to fit all the 12's rear firing. measure between your strut towers, is it at least 36 inches? youd be set! three individual boxes, or the two + one deal, with a trim over it would look absolutely bitchin!

Don't you LOVE those installs? I had a similar install in a 2000 Dodge Ram.. 4 15"s in a truck.. who does that anyways? lol The box itself weighed 150-200lbs.

length x width x height / 1728

(1728 is 12^3, to convert cubic inches to cubic feet)

for not perfectly square boxes, its the area of the crosssection times the length of the box. so the irregular crossection will have to be split up into geometric shapes to determine area, then mulitiplied by length.

and remember, these must all be internal dimesnions! using external ones will yield a number too high....
