Components
OK, so I need new components. I'm looking for opinions on component speakers. I want them to be the best they can be without an amp. I'll be running them off an alpine 7894 headunit. I'm not worried about $ for em, but I'm staying under $600. I currently have Focal 165V but they blew, due to no amp. I'm looking at Alpine R's. What are your guys opinions/ other choices to consider? I've heard that these can run nicely without an amp, is this true? Yes, I know an amp would be ideal for the setup, but I would rather spend the money on other parts for my ride.

personally i think you are wasting your money if you don't amp them. Just get a pair of Jensen's so, when they blow you won't be pissed.

do what you want.......but i don't see spending 600 bucks on components that will just be amped from a HU......not trying to be funny. I'm just real **** when it comes to my audio.
Why spend $600 on speakers and not amp them. I say get $400 components then and spend the rest on an amp. That will be much better. I would say go get some JL XR compnents and a nice amp for them. I have a Kicker 150.2 in the car and a Alpine T220 in my truck. Something like that would do components wonders over HU power.
That makes absolutely no sense.
Low power does not blow speakers, distortion does.
Without an amp, the speakers won't go as loud. So when you try to turn it up you get distortion. This is what ruins them. If anything get an amp. Then when you turn it up it gets loud without distortion. Problem solved.

cause my speakers are blown- there was not enough wattage going to them. I realize this after that only 22 watts or so (from headunit)was going to them, when they need 50+ watts. This is why one is all fQ'd up

for $600, you can get a good set of speakers and an amp to power them, thats what i would do instead of just getting a set of speakers, just to have them f up on you again.
for instance, you can probably get those alpine type r's, and a some alpine 2 channel amp for under $600, think about it, its probably the best solution for your situation.
i've never heard a pair of speakers that didn't sound noticeable better and louder after being amped.

Dude, low power does not blow speakers, distortion does ..... or should I say your right hand on the damn volume ****.
First off. Amps have two ratings rms and max. RMS is a measure of how much constant power an amp can put out all day long without straining. Max is just that, the max amput of power it can output in short bursts. As you approach the max wattage, distortion increases since the amp is straining to get that much power.
When the amp gets too strained it clips and distorts. This is what blows the speakers. As speakers play the wattage goes from 0 to the max wattage needed to produce the desired volume as set by the volume ****. If you look at the actual power output to highs, you will be lucky to be sending them more than 5 watts if that for most volume levels.
Think about the ratings on speakers. Most are like 85db w/ 1watt @ 1 meter. That means that the speaker will be 85db's loud if your 1 meter (3 feet) away when powered w/ ONE watt of power. Now thats really damn loud. But since the scale is logarithmic the wattage needed to go louder increases fast. Every 3 db more requires twice the power. So to be 89db loud you need 2 watts and so on. So for 112db you end up needing 512 watts.
So all in all, low power doesn't blow speakers. If it did, all speakers on the planet would be blown if you ever turned the volume down. Basically with increased power comes less distortion and more clean volume. This decreases your chances of turning it up too loud where distortion begins and your speakers get toasted.
Amp or no amp, if you aren't smart w/ the volume **** your going to toast your speakers anyway.

i can't imagine a set of speakers without an amp, i haven't had a setup like that in 6 yrs, but if i were you i wouldn't spend more than $150 or so on speakers if you aren't going to amp them, take the other $450 and do whatever you'd like with it.
Like John Doe said a pair of Quart RCE216's would work nice, get em from an authorized dealer and they'll cost a lot more than off the internet but if they install them you get a 3 yr warranty.....can't beat that, i've taken advantage of the quart warranty twice in the past 4 yrs, you can't beat it for speakers.

I agree with these guys. Any expensive or "nice" set of components is going to be designed to run off an amp, and will just blow again.
If you really don't want an amp, then just get a set of coax speakers. MBQuart, Boston Acoustics, JL Audio, and Focal all make decent coax lines. If I were you I would really get an amp though!

atta boy... that's the way to go...
I have a set of infinity components that was just running on my HU... they were fine and all till I tried to turn the volume up to like 17 or18... then it get all distorted and sound bad...
i was rather unimpressed with the setup till one day when I got another amp for the cabin speakers. Then it was like night and day difference.
the components sounded awesome! and so did the rear deck speakers too... I will not run speakers without an amp again.
I never would have thought beforehand but now I comcider an amp a necessity for components... the money that was spent is wasted with out one.

the 165 V2's (04 model) are rated better than the 165K's (03 and older model), not the new model 165K2 (04') though, so I've been told besides the 165k2's are out of my price.

you are not a TV station. ratings ain't shiit.
j/k, but i say go with what you like better. if you heard the one rated poorer later and liked them more, you'd kick yourself.
