Custom Box?

I have a diamond cm3 10 inch sub. In a bandpass box yes i know it sucks. My shop told me hell make me a custom ported box for a $100 and it will sound as good as 2 12's dont know how true this is. Is it worth a $100?

you would pay that much almost for a pre-made box. if it's done by good people it can be worth it. do some research, listen to something they've already done, or get a reference.

box is one of the most important factors in your sound.

ask him what hes gonna build.
then come on the board and tell me

if he says he cant tell you or if he spouts bs, then hes full of crap.

for teh most part, you cant get much louder than bandpass

Well when i emailed diamond they told me bandpass isnt recomended at all. Heres what they exactly told me in the email.

The CM3 woofer where designed for small sealed enclosures. There are some vented designs that work well, but bandpass is definitely not recommended. The woofer is just too complex for it, they are very hard to tune and power handling goes way down in a bandpass.

I would def. go with a custom ported box. I have one in my car, and I have noticed a difference from the any other generic boxes. A custom box is well worth the price granted it is put together right. How is the audio shops reputation?

He has a good reputation. He has done some real nice installs. He just did this system for him self with 2 tdx series diamond 12's in this fiberglass sort of thing. Looked real nice and hit really hard

Now when the guy at the shop tells you that a "custom ported box" will sound just as good as two 12's, I think that is some what of an opinion.

The box can only make it sound better, more clear, crisp. It really depends on how the system is being put together. Which subs you are using, amps, how much power is going to each channel, etc. etc.

I think he's looking to make a sale, by "selling the myth". There are so many myths in car audio that people just start believing.

The box is a major factor for the bass, but also weigh in which subs and amp you are getting. If it's not a high end set-up, chances are the box will not work a miracle.

If you are looking to upgrade one day and want to keep the box, I would do it. Just ask yourself if the deal is worth another $100 to have a "custom box"?

like i said earlier, bandpass is usually pretty loud already, so it prolly wont get louder.

might sound a bit clearer though, but ask him what hes tuning it to and what size
