Which subs to get??
Which subs to get??
Ok, figured I would pick everyones head here. Time to do some upgrading on the audio. Currently have 4 10" Kenwood DB's not bad, just not the low deep punch I used to have. I went out this weekend and starting looking around to replace the subs. The choices I have come up with so far are 3 JL 12W6's in a ported enclosure, I've had 3 before in a ported box in my explorer and it was loud.... The only choice is going to be Phoenix Gold, 3 12" Tantrum in a ported box. Now to power everything I have myself a Rockford X7 amp, which is pushing around 1300 watts.
I am asking this because I know JL's will slam, but the PG sounds are a better price. I havent had any experience with PG before but I hear they are moving up in the world. So I am open for suggestions, comments or advice.
Thanks
Forgot to mention, I am going for SPL mainly

tantrum wont compare to a w6... w6 is a GREAT woofer...
by the way, how much are you spending on them, youcould possibly get maybe 2 better woofers for teh same price

The JL's slightly used would be about 140 a pop, the tantrums are going for 199 a pop. If I wanted New W6's it would be about 250 a pop

Yea 349 is a little steep, I mean if I was going to spend that much I would get the new 12W6 V2. 3 subs sounds great, I know its an odd number but trying to fit 8 cubic feet in the back of vic would be a huge headache. Hell fitting 6 cubic feet is hard enough, doesnt sound hard to I want to be able to have the box removable if need be and that darn trunk opening is the biggest pain, not to mention those stupid trunk arms. Plus with 3 W6's I would be able to get about a 1.7 ohm load and get about 1500-1600 watts out of the amp. Plus those Image Dynamics seem to be a little too power hungry, I mean hell 1000 watts a sub, three of those would require me to get another 2 X7's. I was looking at the Infinity Perfects also, are those more geared towards SQ or SPL?

IDMAX just looks power hungry. when i was having amp problems, i had to put in a different amp in the interim. i went from an 800 rms kicker to a 400 peak watt jensen (it was the only working amp i had, i crave bass...). that sub really will sound good with whatever you give it, it is pretty sensitive. truly a fun sub, that takes up very little space.
will it get as loud as 2-3 W6 fully powered? oh hell no. but i would like 2 in a ported box with at least 500rms to each

idmax is FAR from power hungry
one of the most efficient speakers ive ever seen
guy i know hit 142 or 143 with a single max in a sealed boxed tuned for sq with only 900 watts
that same day he took first place in a sound quality iasca comp with that same install

I think two IDMax will kill two W6 V.2s (and maybe even three in SPL). An IDMax IMO would be in the W7 class, which is why it costs more...but IMO, the best bang for the buck, the IDMAX is.
Man and my box that I have would be perfect for two IDMaxes (just need somebracing
)....5 ported cubes and an IDMAX sounds like a possible sonic eargasm!!!! Man, with my JBL, and tuned right on my X-over...oh ish I think I just squirted in my drawls!!!
Don't sleep on ID!!!!! I have never heard one sound bad at car shows that I have heard them.

the W6's are good subs but if you don't have a box for them already, plan on taking your time and making one so you can get all you can out of them. Where in philly are you by the way? It seems like I find a new philly resident everytime I come here lol.
Right outside of philly really, Up in norristown, soon to be moving across the street from reeds. As far as the box goes I'm having someone build it for me. Dont feel like having to figure port length, and crap like that to tune it.
W7's are way over priced if you ask me. I've heard the JL amps before and I wasnt too impressed by them, maybe it was just me. I know a lot of people have them and like them, but for raw, kick your a$$ power, IMO Rockford is just one of the best.
Hell man, if your in KOP we should hang out on day and go drinking or something.
