Looking for general commens about this setup
OK, in my EX coupe i had this setup:
Kenwood Excelon HU
Kenwood Excelon 10 disc Changer
JL 250/1
JL 10W3V2 in a sealed, JL PowerWedge style box
In an effort to save room in my New Hatch, i thought about ditching the 10W3 in favor of a pair of JL6W0 Woofers, or 6 1/2" Woofers of another brand, in the stock rear seat side panel locations
the JLs are 75 Watt continuous, i saw that Rockford makes a 6 3/4" subwoofer that handles up to 150 watts(however im worried about fitment with those).
Id like to use my 250/1 no matter what i do. also would mounting them in this location be classified as ported? sealed? freeair?(im thinkin free-air)
for refernce, i listen to mostly rock(i.e. lots of classic rock, Lynard Skynard, Creedance Clearwater Revival, The Eagles, etc; also a lot of New Rock, Fuel, Seether, Revis, Rob Zombie, Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker, etc; also Country, Brooks'n'Dunn, Garth Brooks, etc, and some Rap, Scarface, etc)
i want mainly a little lower frequency responce over stock, as well as better SPL.
my second alternative was to have a MDF box made to fit on one of the sides behind the rear tire well
suggestions? opinions?
p.s. ill also eventually go with JL XR series up front
Thanks!
Isaac

JL makes that stealthbox that comes with a 12w3, that can be a choice, but if you are really into those 6w0's, be careful, they are subs, and not meant for free-air applications.
those subs need to be in boxes, i would think sealed would be best. you can fiberglass them into the rear seat side panels, i think it will be cool. i've seen both the 6w0 and the rockford 6" woofer (i believe its an HE), and the rockford is definately bigger, but it might be better suited for the power you are throwing at it.

Lud, i just noticed in your reply to Freaks thread that youre making door panels to accept 8's. how involved is that, and how much do you have to modify your door panels?

"why not get the JL microsub with 2 8's in it that would sound great"
quoted from a post responding to the same question on a different site
i do, however respect the opinions of Lud, Mo, and WR first and foremost

8's in teh doors is a big task. remolding a whole new shape to the doors and building a sealed enclosure behind, yet integrated into the door panel is a biiiiig task... on top of that im also relocating my 3 ac ***** into the driver door panel as well, so its a serious task...not reccomended to the noob fabricator.
gotta know your way around fiberglass, vinyl, and bondo quite well.
also, a shop would charge you 3 arms and a 2 legs for what im doing

ID makes some of the best subs I have ever heard...IMO ID and JL are the cream of the crop when it comes to mainstream sub makers (and car audio in general).

BTW, IMO, Sounddomain is the best place to by ID online...they are authorized, and will price match. Hell, I think the IDMax is like $330 right now.

most respectable 8's out there are the jl 8's, w3, w6, w7, elemental designs e8a, image dynamics id8, and i cant quite remember the rest, but ill post as i remember
image dynamics e8a and 8w7 wouldnt have enough amp power from your 250/1 most probably
check jl's site for their 8 specs, and id8 is rated at 150

ok, well, since i dont know where i can hear the e8a's, or id8's, im prolly lookin at the JL W3 or W6,
thanks
btw, before i commit, are there any speakers that would fit the stock rear locations that would have equal bass? maybe use the woofers out of a component set in the back, with the mids and tweets up front? or is that a bad idea?
thanks

there are some midranges that would give you SOME midbass, but not as much
is this a coupe or sedan? (6.5 or 6x9?
i think i know of a few 6.5's that put out some niiice low end

its for a 03 SI hatch
I would think that install and tuning would take a much higher priority over equipment.
tempest may take 250 rms well, get superloud, be accurate as all heck, nice warm low sounds, but if you wanted to save trunk space, what does any of that matter?
equipment lists dont determine stereos, installs and tuning does.
local competitor threw together a stereo for his GF car then "borrowed" it for competition. He took first place at every show. One of his competitors ran TWO SETS of Rainbow reference speaerks WITH the optional midbasses for EACH set. We are talking about $7500 PER component set and $800 PER pair of midbass. Do the math, he paid more for his SOUNDSTAGE than most of us on our stock CAR.
whupped by a stereo thrown together. door speakers pointed sideways, tweeters in the doors in a hole drilled next to the latch, each side.
It goes to show that equipment lists are meaningless to determine real thoughts about performance. install install install! tuning tuning tuning!
