DIY review: polyfill in sub box

well money has been tight lately, but i was still wanting to tweak my setup in some way, always trying to improve. i'd read a few posts about stuffing the sub box with polyfill to improve the sound, so i figured i'd actually try it. i was biased way back in my car audio days by a guy who said it just made his subs get too punchy, and everything i'd read led me to think i would get a deeper sound as if the sub were in a larger box. but here's how it went...

The Equipment:
one 12" IDMAX
one q-logic 1.25cu box
20 oz. polyfill (cost $4 from joann fabrics)

the specs for the IDMAX recommend a 1.3-1.5cu box for sealed applications, so being below the low end here i figured this would be a good test. i had read that you should use 24oz of polyfill for every cubic foot, but this sub has a large magnet (.12cu) and i didn't want to risk over stuffing and making it sound worse.

The Install:

i removed the sub, put in the polyfill fairly evenly, and reinstalled. no real tough stuff...

The Results:

i honestly forgot i did this for about a week. i'd been in a rock music mood and didn't really have a lot of bass going. then i heard "rosa parks" by outkast and suddenly noticed a big improvement. the sub handled the lower, louder frequencies of rap with ease, where as before it would seem to almost clip if played at high volumes. also i swear my headlights do not dim as much as they did before. i don't know if this is just in my mind or not, but just pointing out what i noticed.

The Review:

9/10

i went from not believing it would do anything good to realizing that for almost no cost a small improvement in sound can be made. definitely reccommend for the cheap audio enthusiasts out there. easily undone if you are not happy with the results.
