the best is 3/4 MDF......ur local lumber yard will have it, but it is expensive. U can got the cheap way and use particle board, it is not recommended, but there is nothing wrong with it, unless it gets rained on.....lol

use 3/4 in. particle board or MDF, use drywall screws (1 1/2 in) about 3 inches apart, use braces inside box, use liquid nails to adhere panels together, use liquid nails on the edges inside the box and take ur finger and glide it along the edges to make it completely air tight and smear some liquid nails overtop each screw in the box. Anymore questions, then PM me. I've built approximately 30 boxes in my life, which isn't alot to some but is 30 times more than others have.
3/4" MDF is standard for boxes. Use lots of screws and no matter what you use glue any seals etc... Actually the glue will hold more than the screws if done right ....
Particle board is a big no no. It's just not rigid enough. Sounds like ***. I tried to use it once in a pince when I ran out of MDF. Man was I pissed. Sounded like *** and since I glued it I couldn't get it off. Only solution was to start completely over. It was worth it though. Sounded so much better.
Personally I like these laminated pine boards Lowes sells. You can get up to a 1"x16" (5/8" x 15.5" actual). Really nice to work with. Worked great for my two JL 8w3's last weekend.
I'd love to try a box out of like 2" oak planks. Now that would be a box baby.

ehh... you can use 1/2" MDF and be fine, depending on how you finish it. I have a box made of 1/2", which was built by a sub company and it works great. but, and this is the big factor i think, it is finished with spray-in bedliner (Rhino Linings).
