"unprotected" subwoofer
"unprotected" subwoofer
my subwoofer box has the subwoofer exposed to the interiors of teh trunk. if i buy groceries and they slide in the way of the sub, would it damage teh sub? my old sub had a viewing glass, so it wasnt' a problem. now, i have a diamond tdx 12 in sub, the box leaves the subwoofer exposed. if the beat hits hard and there's something in the way, will this do any damages to my subwoofer?
if u dont have a grill and somthig hits it. It will be damaged. think about it. it is much cheaper to get a grill than it is to replace the subs. and when u sed ur old set of subs had a viewing glass... that means u had a bandlass box right?
i dunno about the viewing glass, when i bought my sub, they made my box w/ a viewing glass, even tho i never told them to (but they didnt' charge me extra neither, so what did i care back then?). i didnt' know that much about subs back then, so i thoguht it was standard.
Subs are pretty sturdy. Something hitting it won't necessarily damage it. If something hits it hard enough, or if something sharp hits it, etc. it could be damaged. The only subs I know that are sensitive to the touch are alumapro subs because they are made of aluminum and can dent if you press your find in the speaker. If you're worried about it at all, then I would get a grill for it. Get something that doesn't give easily, like something made out of metal and not something soft. I've seen some subs come with some weak plastic grills that do nothing.

Real Enclosure
'rE(-&)l, 'ri(-&)l, in-'klO-zh&r
1. Real meaning better quality. Enclosure referring to the speaker box.
a. A box that matches the airspace parameters of the speaker that you are attempting to use without unneccessary frivilous design.
2. Anything other than Bandpass.
Most car stereo shops, especially the ones that MAKE boxes, will tell you that bandpass boxes are a lousy design.

i disagree about the bandpass box, Bellz. you just have to custom make the box to a very high standard to each sub. i am making a box right now, and i know how hard it is to get everything matched up just PERFECT, especially with a table saw. i do agree about prefabricatied boxes, as they are usually made so that a couple frequencies sound really good, a while the rest sound average. if you can get a good design and build on one, it should dominate the competition. i have yet to hear one of these ultimate boxes, but i haven't been to a show in forever, so... grain of salt

I'm a fan of transmission-line boxes myself, but they're so big and heavy that I wouldn't use one unless it was a mid to full size car.
Ever since I heard a few of them at this one stereo shop in Atlanta, I'm convinced that a properly built TL box will outperform any other design. They're just not practical for everyone, due to their size.

TL boxes, snailshell boxes, all these other boxes, yes, theyre all great, but there is no one ultimate enclosure
also, as to your comment about bandpass enclosures, a properly designed bandpass enclosure will sound quite good...
by the way, you should check out dual chamber tri-tuned (DCTT) or aperiodic enclosures... there are some sq junkies that swear upon aperiodic as a godsend.

Here's a link to TL boxes for those who've never heard of them:
