HI i got $1500 dollars to spend on a system for my truck, 2002 GMC sierra ext cab short bed 4 door. the stock system is horrible so i need a better system and me i love bass i cant live without yet i live sound quality to so i need speakers that have good mid and high range and the subwoofers to habdle everything else.the front speakers are 5 1/4 round and the back are 4x6 small i know but i am willing ot drill a bigger whole to fit bigger for more wattage handling. and i have gotta have 2 12`s under the back seat but dont know how to fit it there and my head unit i whant like a good one with mp3 playback and a color screen not big lcd just like a simple dsx 800 i think. got any ideas

Listen to them in a store, see what you like. THey ebay yourself a new system. I dunno what you should get though, but dont go all out on subs, and then cheap out on the amp or vice versa. 12"s would be tight, I had 2 12" punch zs, but i sold those and got 2 10" JLw3s, i rock the sh*t out of those. IMO, stay away from Sony

Your front speakers are 6 1/2's not 5 1/4's. Prefab boxes are readily available for your truck, although they are going to be for 10's, not 12's. I dont really see 12s fitting well, actually. But in a truck, 2 good 10s are Plenty loud. Every box i've ever seen for you truck will have the subs under the back seat firing down.

Just my .02 . For the mids and highs I would have to say MB Quartz. I have them and love them, never had a problem and they are clean as anything. Two different choices of subs. One would be JL the other would be kenwood DB subs, both require a small box and should be able to fit under the seat of your truck. Kenwoods are nice because they are like 94% eff which means you wont need as much power to move them. Head units, personally if you want clean sound Eclipse would be nice, but be prepared to spend a few extra bucks, otherwise Kenwood, ( Excelon ) would be the way to go with kenwood. Amps, its really up to you. JL amps are nice, but pricey. GreenNVicious is going to hate me for this, Rockford is good for the subs. For the mids and highs, I'm drawing a blank. I havent been into SQ for a while. When I was in SQ Xtant were nice clean amps, not sure about any more though. Again this is just my .02 , I'm not looking to get in a arguement with anyone.

Yeah, although it's just their P-series set. Not that it's a bad set, but I went with the Kappa's because I trust Infinity. Had it been a set of Q's there's no question!!

LOL I was just kidding around man, like I said, no beef. Just not my thing, but I can't change personal opinions.

Anyways, Target is right, MB Quart would sound badass. I got an infinity component system in the front, and ROCKFORDS (AHEM!!) in the back. Rockfords sound koo for free, I blew my Pioneer's twice, so Best Buy only had Rockford's in 6x9s as the only other choice. I'm happy though. Amplify all those bad boys too while you're at it!

I run MB Quart PSD's, and I love them....I personally think they sound much better than Infinity. The tweeter is smoother, louder, and if you seal up the door, the mid kicks ***.

Dont waste money on rear 4x6's, you would barely hear them with a nice set of components anyway.

Q's are a waste of money unless you can truly appreciate them, plus they need more power, so I would just stick with PSD's.

Ah, you know what I mean. I knew I shouldn't have said "Top notch" but... maybe decent is a better word. Nice maybe. A "Nice" setup for less that $1500. That works for me.

Green, its cool man.

I have to agree with what everyone else is saying the PSD Quartz are nice. I have two sets in my vic with about 150 watts and they scream.

Bryn, I know what you mean bro. If I didnt just spend 800 bucks on stuff I would be over that deal like flies on..... well you know

My .02 , LCD screens are over rated unless you have a playstation or something hooked up to it

i have had some experiance with a friend's system in a 94' z-71, which also uses the GM standard 4X6 and we installed a HU, and what not, and based on your post i believe this setup would suit your needs... as far as having pretty good SQ along with the bass response, in your post you said HU with mp3 capability with color screen, in interpret this as a HU with a color display, not a LCD monitor, so correct me if i am wrong... anyway, here's a setup that would work, based on the install i did in the 94' Z-71, with some modification (he didnt have as much in the budget so i had to cheap out in a few places)...

(All of this can be found at sound domain)

HU: Pioneer Premier DEHP7500MP $249.95

5.25" speaker: MB Quart Reference RSC213 component system (5.25 midbass, and 3/4 tweet and crossover) on sale for $159.95

4X6" speaker: Infinity Reference 6402cf 4X6 2-way (yes i know its the reference line, but it screams in this truck, or it did in the 94') $99.95

Amp 1(4 channel): JBL Power P-80.4 (40/4) $249.95

Amp 2 (mono): JBL PowerValve BP600.1 (I'm not real familiar with the JBL products but some people on here swear that their mono amps are great, so i decided why not, they seem to have good power for a decent price, which is why i said JBL 4 channel so they'd match in appearance) $349.95

Sub: Infinity Kappa Perfect 10 VQ (we installed a perfect 10 in the 94' and it sounded great, had good SQ and a good bass response, plus they work great in small boxex {requires at minimus 0.30 sealed, and up to 1.0 sealed})(this also has a feature where you can change the motor strenght in the woofer by varying the polepiece inserts, the one i installed didn't have this feature, but you should be able to optimize this for your application using this feature)
$299.95

that gives you a grand total of: $1409.70 which leaves you with $90.30 to apply to install kits, wiring etc) with the additional $200 you said you may be able to use you could also get an enclosure, or if you have skill with woodworking you could even build an enclosure for the sub, sorry, i couldn't find one for your specific application is why i didn't account for that or include that... you should be pretty pleased with that setup as far as SQ and bass response goes (and if anyone wants to ammend the amp selection that's fine, i just figured i'd look into JBL since people are starting to use them more frequently and say they are good for the money)... plus you might even be able to score some of those on ebay for a little less money, giving you a little more left over for room for the install if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself
