pretty much i would agree with ludlam ... but personally i have recently switched from pioneer to alpine and picked up somewhat better quality of sound coming through my speakers and i hear more detail in the music... im not tryin to promote alpine or nothing but i just wanted to state my conclusion from my experiences
Things to look at are what are you going to be hooking up to this HU? CD changer, b/c most need the same brand HU. How many amps? pre outs? HI/Low passovers? other RCA in? other RCA out? can you easily add a dvd/lcd to it? Find what you want in your HU, then ask the question again, otherwise I have a old cassette HU that I will gladly sell to you for a certified MO of only 200$, keeping you under budget. I will even do free shipping!
I just installed a clarion dxz735mp, and so far im pleased with it. It sounds great, and as a bonus the colors can change to match your interior. Also I can see the display perfectly, i know some stereos its hard to read on our cars. Whatever you pick though try finding it on ebay you could probably save yourself 100 or more.
I take back what I said, after having the head unit in I noticed some problems with the sound. The head unit would send out a cracking sound to all the speakers at a higher volume, I talked to someone at one of the installation places I went to and he's heard of clarions doing that.

so you're saying that the D/A converter in an eclipse is exactly the same as a pioneer? er no... HU will definetly make a difference in sound. Pay attention to the voltage of the preouts, higher is better. Personalle I like eclipse the best, you won't find a deck for $550 with 16 volt balanced line outpute, a 96/24 D to A converter, 3 year warranty AND 1 year theft protection guarantee anywhere else

I'm pretty sure he doesnt need 16 volt balanced line outputs if he was looking to spend $100 on a HU

And if he is just getting it to play CD's (no amp) then preout voltage isnt an issue.
I think to properly answer his question we need more details about what he wants to do (amp and subs, multple amps with subs and speakers, or just stock speakers or replacements with no amp) before we can recomend a HU.

1.which one looks better? Sony
2. WHich one sounds better? Eclipse
I hope your kidding! Your saying the best deck is the one that looks the best?? Last week you locked somebodys because they were comparing subs, by the amount of vibration in the car.
Look for features like, Rca voltage, Deck RMS power (if using), Does it have a built in EQ, HOw many RCA's does it have, Does it play MP3 or WMF.
These are thing you want to take into concideration when choosing a headunit
Spend atleast another 50$ for a better headunit. You will thank your self later.

for under $200, clarion makes some nice HU's. the DXZ635MP or the better looking, non-mp3 DXZ535, i know those are under $200 online. pioneer would also get my vote, i believe the 5500 and 6500 are cheap (under $200). i can't say much about alpines low end, but if they build them the same as there higher end units, then i would say they are good buys.
check them out at a local shop first, see what you like, and then order online for the best price.
