Question Did I Push My Sub Too Far?

Hey everyone, i've been talking to people on caraudioforum.com about my problem with the tinsel leads snapping on my older 12w3 and they were telling me that it was most likely due to me pushing my sub farther than it is meant to go. The W3 is rated at 250W@2Ohms and my Alpine M300 is rated at 300W@2Ohms. Now, I listen to my sub as far as it will go, but I don't turn it up to where it starts to fart out. Still, I maybe pushing it to far, I need you all to tell me if thats the case with my 12w3. I also thought that JL underrated all of its subs so I assumed that the w3 could handle 300W. If you all could please clear this up for me then id appreciate it. Secondly, I replace my w3 with a W3v2 and now I am paranoid that it will happen to my new sub. Since the V2 is rated at 300W@2Ohms, do I have anything to worry about since that is what my amplifier is rated at? If the same thing can happen to my new one, could you all please tell me what I need to do to fix this problem, preferably what amp setting I should mess with, if it is indeed my amplifier that is causing the tinsel leads to snap. Thanks again.

are the 250/300 RMS or MAX, that makes a difference, if the JL is 250RMS, it should have a MAX power of higher than that. Putting 300watts to that sub may have made it sound distorted, but not blow it. There should be no problem with running the 300w3v2 with that amp. The other thing to look at is the rating on the amp RMS or max?

so i bought a tempest once, ran it in my car off 600 rms form a jbl1200.1, loved it. thought it sounded great, subwoofer never bottomed out, etc.

one day it just stopped working properly. sounded great the day before, but never after. happened all of the sudden. so i sent it in for repair.

adire told me that linear p2p for the tempest was 1.5 inches, that they found voicecoil wear from 2.5-2.75 inches peak to peak!

so its possible for yoru woofer to sound beautiful up to the day it dies.

id agree with what they say in CAF< you pushed it farther than linear excursion was meant for it to go, and underwent mechanical failure.

how to prevent? i couldnt tell you honestly, i personally dont know. it jsut goes to show you that sometimes, you just never see it coming. I pray to the gods of caraudio and offer sony sacrifices so that it no longer happens ;p

Yukonart will become famous soon enough
The place I got mine offer extended warranty (that INCLUDES blown speakers) so I just got that on both my subs and my amps.

My installer goes with me to most of the cars shows I enter. He keeps telling me to push it. Last time he said to me "Art, if they blow just bring it in tomorrow and I'll slap two more 12D4s in there."
