instant mp3's at yrou fingertips, can play music videos, add a wireless card and you can park yoru car in yrou driveway and download all yoru new music from yoru desktop inside, not to mention get on the internet!

you can drive around (for techies) and find EVERY access point inside yoru city, not to mention any other city

can play GAMES! not jsut yrou PS2 games, can you imagine a team of showcars all with in car computers with wireless? could all play games at shows together over LAN

just imagine all you can do with a computer normally, but you have the advantage of being able to do it in a car!

dont they make UPS's that have USB connectors on them, hook to yoru computer then automatically shut them down when power is cut? youd never lose power and have to slowboot yoru machine then

that's actually quite a good idea using the UPS shutdown systems.

But it'd be pretty stupid to use an ATX motherboard in a car. ESPECIALLY putting a tower in there.

The method i'm intending to get is to get the new EPIA 10000 Mini-ITX board. It's a tiny motherboard with all-in-one. CPU is soldered in, built in video with output, built in sound, firewire, USB2.0. It'll basically fit right inside the glove compartment.

for more info: http://www.mini-itx.com/

Power is rather to simple to hook up, advantage of 12V. Just need to rig a DVD-Rom somewhere, preferable front slot. And bolt on a harddrive.

As for peripherals, some may go with wireless keyboard and mouse combo, but that's just rediculous to drive around with. Since i already have an ATI remote-wonder (the USB RF wireless remote), i'm able to have a lotta shortcut keys and mouse control. alternatives are rigging a trackball or touchpad on the console.

the slot right above the cupholder would be great for a dvd-rom drive.

I bought a small P3 computer I wanted to use in my car but it does not have video out and does not have any PCI slots. Is there anyway to still get video out of this or do I have to use my laptop?

I believe they make things that connect to the monitor out of the pc and convert it to a video out signal. Though in truth I think they take 110V but the PC probably does as well.

It is a 800 mhz P3, 128 megs of ram, I am going to upgrade the HD. That is pretty much the basics. I picked it up off of ebay for $80 and it is small enough to fit under my seat.

PSU is easy because they sell them for car computers. As far as slapping a desktop computer in your trunk, you've got to worry a bit more about HDD skipping and the heat. Real Carputers have suspension for the HDDs. it can be done though. The biggest thing is to make sure you've got a touchscreen that works. Its kinda pointless to use a keyboard.

I would do it too if I could do dirt cheap

drivesoft is the biggest waste of money imho. When u buy drivesoft, it ranges from $2900 to $3400, depending what setup u want. I did my carputer for half the price and it does everything drivesoft does. If you help setting up ur carputer goto MP3Car .

Car Audio and Electronics magazine did a side by side comparison of a built Carputer, and a Drivesoft in their most current issue. You should check it out. They compared ease of use, ease of install, etc. The thing with drivesoft is you don't have to compile all of the parts, etc. All you have to do is install it. It's much easier on the brain to do it that way, IMO.

Still no answer for my question...? Is there anyway to get some kind of hardware which will take the vga output from my computer and turn it into rca cables. I do not have any option of adding a different video card.

By laptop hard drives the 2.5 inch types. They are built for a bit of abuse. You can buy adaptors to convert 2.5 drives to fit in 3.5 inch bays. Also you may be able to get a shock resistant adaptor for added durability.

check out mp3car, theyve got some pretty good ideas home made solutions already implemented and able to tell you what worked for them and what didnt.

even down to stuf flike padding their hard drive with crumpled newspaper or suspending it from rubberbands and such.
