Sub Help
I just finished the mids and highs for the time being on my 03 civic ex coupe. and i am looking for a good sub. I have several options and would like anyone opinion on what i should do.
the amp i have is a kicker ix2302 (spec's below), i am currently running a kenwood mp522 with infinty 6.5 2-ways up front w/stock tweets and 6.5 3-way kappas in the rear. As you can see my highs are taken care of!
The subs i am looking at are;
a. 2 kicker comp vr's (currently trying to sell in a customized box for an audi, but willing to keep them) (4ohm)
b. 1 infinity kappa perfect dvc/dvq
c. audiobahn sub (???? eqiv. price of the dvq)
d. Any other options?
What would you do? I want a sub that can handle the power of the ix (the 2 vrs did not utilize the max power of the amp, they distorted very easily), but still sound crisp and good!
Here are the amp spec's
Product Description:
Impulse stereo amps are rated from 25 to 230 watts per channel into four Ohms. These amps are two-ohm stable, so you can get big bumps in power into two ohm stereo or four ohm bridged mono speaker loads. Still want more power? Just give these amps more voltage and they respond by giving more power to your speakers!
Built-in 18dB/octave active electronic crossovers with selectable 70Hz or 110 Hz crossover points and switch-able for high pass, low pass, or all pass let you route signals to the proper speakers without using outboard crossovers.
Specifications:
RMS Power (watts/channel) @12.5V, 4 Ohm stereo, 0.085% THD, all channels driven 230 x 2
RMS Power (watts/channel) @12.5V, 2 Ohm stereo, 0.2% THD, all channels driven 360 x 2
RMS Power (watts/channel) @12.5V, 4 Ohm bridged mono, 0.2% THD 720
Dynamic Power (watts/channel) @14.4V, 4 Ohm stereo, 0.085% THD, all channels driven 310 x 2
Dynamic Power (watts/channel) @14.4V, 2 Ohm stereo, 0.2% THD, all channels driven 450 x 2
Dynamic Power (watts/channel) @14.4V, 4 Ohm bridged mono, 0.2% THD 900
Dimensions (in.) 2.5H x 9.5W x 18.9L
Dimensions (mm) 63H x 241W x 482L

Only thing I can say about the DAs is make sure you give them as much power as they're rated for. . . . don't be afraid to go to their M3 line, either. ALL the Diamond subs kick ***.
A single Diamond Audio M6 sub, I would recommend the 10D2, would be perfect.
Specifications
Power Range (watts RMS): 800
Impedance (ohms): Dual 2
Sensitivity (dB SPL): 90 (w/2.83-V input @ 1 meter)
Freq. Resp: 25Hz-250Hz(±3dB)
Now, someone correct me if I'm wrong, but if the two 2 ohm voice coils were wired in series, they would produce a 4 ohm load. . . .
And since your amp can do 720 Watts x1 @ 4ohms, I think you'd be in great shape! And I can tell you from personal experience, these subs are NICE. Put that sucker in a sealed box to it's specs and you'll be thoroughly amazed at the output and the clarity.

Oh yeah. . .and the price. . . . you should be able to find one of these somewhere for around $200-250

But don't forget to budget for the proper enclosure. Without the right one, ANY sub is going to sound like total ****.
Personally, I would go for a JL 12 or 13W6v2 before I went for the alpine TypeR. It plays tighter, and has better upper frequency response than the TyperR. Although, if you want TypeR's, get two....that amp will drive them nicely. Remember though that you want to run at a final impedance of 4ohms. If you can find Diamond stuff though, it's pretty damn good. I'd say it's a step above the W6v2, also the Eclipse Aluminums are excellent.
I would go to a shop and listen to the different models before you make a choice....you may hate the way I like my subs to sound, so these suggestions might not fit you. Know what I mean?

yah i feel yah. Thank everyone for the feedback, i will listen to several subs and such in my search for decision. I think i am going to try to sell the fiber glass box without the subs in it off ebay, and use the kicker vr's till i decide on what i want. Thanks again!

JL W6v2's also cost an additional $300 more than the type-r's... You might want to look into elemental designs subs...
