How much power do I need?

I'm thinking of hooking up 2 Cerwin Vega Subs (10in Vega Series), MbQuart 6.5in Components and 3 way 6x9's. I was told to get 2channel 600+ watt amp for the subs, how many watts do I need for the front? I was also told Crossfire is a good brand. I've never even heard of it.

Well it all depends on how many wats your speakers are, you have to look at their specs, and see how many watts are required. I have a 800w sony xplod amp powering my infinit kappa's w/ tweters as well as my keenwood 3 way 6 1/2 in the back. Then I have another 1000w sony xplod amp powering my 12" sony aluminum cone sub. Make sure you dont get amps that are too weak or too strong for your speakers, or you'll end up messing them up anyway.

word, the rating on the subs is XXXX rms OR peak power. this means that this is the power rating they can withstand at a constant level. most amps provide power at a constant level (in fact, i've not heard of one that doesn't), and this is the number you should watch out for like Jay said.

the other power, the peak power is what the subs can handle for a somewhat shorter length of time...it's the max wattage they can handle safely.

so like Jay said, just make sure you get an amp that is right at or above your subs rms power rating. you can always turn the gain down on the amps...the gain reduces something inside (sorry i don't know what) so that you won't blow your speakers.

for example, i'm running almost 215 watts rms to my little infinity 4x6s and infinity 6x9. they are rated at like 65 and 150 watts rms, each. you just turn the gain down until there is no distortion and voila, you're set.

you prolly didn't want that much detail, but hope this all helps. keep us posted on what happens.

P.S. i've never heard of Crossfie either...that don't mean a thing tho'

no no no no no

peak power is a completely imaginary number invented by companies to make things look better.

you think sony would be able to sell anything if people found out its 760 watt amps only really gave you 180 watts?

well, i agree with Ludlam a lil bit. peak is a bit misleading, but it still does matter. what really matters is the rms. cause like he said, their amp says it will generate 760 watts, when in reality it does only 180 (whether that's per channel or both, i'm not sure what he means)...the peak is the max it could generate for like a second only.

does that sound better Ludlam? i thought i put that earlier...apparently i didn't...sorry
