Rear Deck Fatmat sound goes bye-bye
Within the past few days i started to fatmat my car. First the speakers, then the trunk lid, and finally the rear deck.
After fatmatting the trunk lid i noticed a definite difference in how loud my subs played. I thought it worked very well.
The next day i took apart my backseat and rear deck and put fatmat on my rear quarter panels and on the trunk lid. I'm not using rear speakers so i took the stock ones out and placed them in my closet until i get ready to trade in my car in the year 2007. I covered the entire rear panel with fatmat, over the holes where the rear speakers are supposed to go and everything.... and now i dropped the spl of my bass by lets say, 3-5 db's, maybe more. The sound from the subs is no longer going through the rear deck of my car and into my cabin and now it is pissing me off, the only way to get the spl that i previously had is to keep my seats down. I don't want my seats down!
should i just cut out holes where the rear speakers should be to let the air come thorugh? but wouldn't that make my rear deck rattle like hell again? I put a half inch piece of foam between the rear deck and rear windshiled to avoid rattles.
so basically, should i have not covered over my entire rear deck or what

I did the exact same thing, but I did cut out where my rear speakers were, and I really don't hear that much of a difference when my rear deck wasn't fatmatted. That is with my seats up though, I have two amps mounted on the rear seats, so I have both folded down and its even louder.

i noticed before i put any fatmat in my car that the most annoying problem i got rattle-wise was from the plastic rear deck rattling against the rear window, the foam tape solved this problem pretty much, of course i could still hear every inch of metal in the back half of my car resonating whenever the bass hits, this is where the fatmat comes in. Tomorrow i'm going to cut out holes where the rear speakers go, hopefully this will give me my bass back!!
Or i could just go out and buy some new subs and a few thousand watt amp and blast the bass right through the back seats of my car.
I'd rather cut the hole though and stick with what i got for now

you don't need to cover every square inch with fatmat. it adds weight to the metal so it will not resonate as much. so by applying a few sheets on the deck your problem will be solved, no need to cover the speaker holes, fatmat on air will not benefit you at all

Yeah probably not 3-5, maybe i had too much wax in my ears, but it definitely made it much quiter, of course when i put both rear seats down now it makes it louder than it was before with the seats down and no fatmat on the rear deck.
i guess i'll just go cut those holes
