k20a2 with auto tranny. is it possible?
i have made arrangements with some guy in the atlanta area who is selling the k20a2 and all the necessary parts to me for $4000. then i was talking to a mechanically inclined professor (a mechanic himself) in my school familiar with hondas and all these methods of "souping up" a honda. he has one himself, but that is a crx with a turboed integra ls engine he installed himself. anyways, he tells me that it will be impossible to put the 6 speed rsx tranny since my car is auto. yes, in fact, he says he knows a lot about our cars. but i dont know if that is true or not. then he tells me that the auto tranny would bolt on to the k20 and the d17a2 ecu could be compatible if you set the correct shift points and the correct air/fuel ratios. he then says "now, all you need is ecu programming since the d17a2 tranny was originally designed for the d17a2 only" i was like "what?" now i'm really confused. i need a little insight now to see if we can really use an auto tranny with a k20a2. if we could really use the auto tranny with a k20a2, would this swap be even worthwhile?????????

To do a swap you'd have to install the engine, tranny, driveline, ECU and various other parts. Our tranny will not bolt up the a K20 since its a different bolt pattern. Even if you could you'd have to beef up the tranny internals to handle the extra power.

that is not entirerly true you can do the swap buit need even more modifications to your car, and i think you could bolt on an auto RSX tranny cause i don't think the D17 an k20 tranny are compatible.....

first off, i know for a fact that the rsx-s does not come with an auto tranny. so cant i use the base rsx auto tranny instead? and which ecu would i have to use? the base rsx or the rsx-s? this swap will be more difficult than i thought. i have already wired the guy $4k. pleaze guys, i wanna remain optimistic.

i dont believe you can bolt the base RSX tranny to the S engine. You would be better off converting your auto to a manual. Its gonna require more modification but in the end youll be happier with the overall result.

K series and D series engines rotate in opposite directions... bolting a D series tranny up to the K motor will give you 4 reverse gears and 1 forward... totally useless. You're going to have to use a tranny from a K series, but I don't think the Sport shift auto is going to work with the A2 engine... there are some differences with the engine layout that will probably mess it up. And the K20A2 reving to 8500 or so... the tranny is not going to like that, it's not designed to rotate that fast. You're going to have to convert it to manual, back out, or sell the engine to someone else.
This didn't occur to you before you bought it???????????

dunno, but i know i got kinda impulsive on the buy since it sounds like so exciting to have a 200 hp motor on a light civic, but i guess since i have 11k left of my college fund for the former school i used to go to (ga tech) i may as well spend all of it towards the swap and drive my parents car for a while till i get it done by the professor at school. since i know he helped one student do an engine swap, i'm assuming he'll charge like $2000-4000 for swapping it while i spend 3k more for the other mounts and accessories and all the other stuff, but in the long run, i think i'll be one happy gal.
btw, my dad doesnt care what i do to the car since we're upper class, (didnt mean to boast), maybe he can help me, and its already paid in full and we didnt get an ext. warranty. but hopefully i get it done. Originally posted by Intruder
lol, if you were really "upper class" then wouldn't you be rolling in something a little more upper class than a civic? Lol.... no harm intended...

The engine is the same size... the cylinders are each .1L larger. Probably a longer stroke, but I don't feel like looking right now. Only 160 HP, but lots of torque, and better for turbo because it's got more displacement.

makes sense, checked into it. it does have a longer stroke so therefore more torque. and also the compression ratios is indeed lower so it would handle a big turbo with ease, i'm talking about a t4 or larger. but i should have thought ahead b4 buying that k20a2. but oh well.....
