Question H series motor question

I have a question for any honda engine experts out there. My brother has a 1992
Honda prelude that originally had the H23A1. About 6 or 8 months ago the original
engine died. We found a place to buy a new motor and bought it. The guy said the
motor was from Japan which made things interesting. The casting number on the
block reads H23A. I have read that JDM engines are numbered with four digits i.e.
H23A, while exported engines are marked with 5. i.e. D17A1, H22A2 etc. I have read this
at only one site. Can anyone shed some light on our little issue. We can't find engine specs,
or even which honda the H23A originally came in. Thanks.

This is true. JDM engines are labeled like that. A USDM B16A2 and a USDM B16A3 are both stamped as a B16A in Japan. Which remidns just how much I miss my del sol's b16a3

The H22A had 2 different levels... On the 4th gen Lude, it had 200HP. Thats DOHC VTEC.... then for the 5th gen lude, they offered a H22 with 220HP along with a model for 200HP. Could be the same as the old Accord Euro- Type R
