Which parts of the exhaust are resposible for the gains?
I assume if I buy one of these $400 exhausts that it comes with some pipes, too, right? Ok, so $400 is expensive as hell for +2hp.
What if someone were to buy a generic muffler and then get some custom piping done from the cat to the muffler at a muffler shop? I presume that would be much less expensive and probably give just as much gains, right?
Ok, so if that would work, where can one get a generic muffler with a 2.25" or 2.50" tip? On eBay all I've seen is 3" up to a 6" tip muffler I saw once. 6" is huge, it's bigger than a cd.
So, I'm not sure, but I know an exhaust setup has at least these parts:
1. Pipe from the header to the cat
2. The cat.
3. Pipe from the cat to the muffler
4. The muffler.
Ok, so of those, how much power is each responsible for? In other words, would buying just a muffler with a bigger opening make any difference, I would assume not because it's just at the very end, but what do I know. I know the cat is responsible for a lot on our cars because it's so restrictive. So if you were to keep the stock cat (read: legal) but replace parts 1, 3, and 4 (above) with custom mandrel bent 2.25" diameter piping, that would free up some power, right? But anything over 2.25" is too big for our cars if they are NA, right?
Thanks,

well if you want the MOST gain just have them make you a pipe from the Header to the muffler. That would eliminate ANY restrictions(cat or resonator). Make sure they use mandrel bending(helps with airflow) and buy a muffler with a straight through design
Your right, you can easily build your own custom cat back exaust and get hp gains. I went to a local import shop bought a r6 carbon fiber muffler for 140$ and then went to a muffler shop and had custom downpiping bent out of 2.5" stainless steel and i got badass hp gains and it sounds awesome. Total custom exaust price was just about 350$ and it was a great investment, sounds way better then greddy or dc also.
How about a complete catback Flowmaster with no resonator for $191.98?

Do you have a link for this part? I did a search for it and the only thing it returns is motorcycle mufflers.

Do you have pics? I want to see what it looks like. Thanks.

it says "HP & Torque: 10-15 HP/26 ft lbs Torque"
Haha, yeah right. Not on our cars.
How come this muffler is the CHEAPEST and gives the BEST gains (of the gains they report)? Yet people still buy the more expensive ones.
This one is legal, right? What is a resonator?
Thanks,

A 4" chrome tip will gain at least 25hp, even if the rest of the exhuast is 1".
No, but really... I installed my HKS rear section yesterday. It doesn't feel more powerful, rather "less restricted". Stock baffley chamber muffler is definatly crap.

If spending a lot less and get the same gain. Why did all those exhaust companies take forever to make an exhaust for any car? There must be a reason behind it b/c they do some R&D(I hope) and some have noise restriction. So I would rather spend an extra 100 to get something nicely make for the car and pass sound law. I also don't like those ricy sound from those big muffler. If you want most gain you should invest a header such as HP. That will sure give you gain. I won't do it because I am planning on a turbo instead.
