radar/laser detector
I was curious if anyone had opinions on a good radar/lasar detector thing, and what some good brands are.
Also if someone has an idea on what the law is on those (in specific California) I would appreciate it.

#1 Valentine One
#2 Passport 8500
#3 Bels are nice
Detectors are legal everywhere BUT Virginial
Jammers are illegal everywhere
watching your speed and keeping your eyes open is best

The escort 8500 is rated the best of the best.. the box tells me so! It's saved my *** many a time too. Gives me the warning way before I come close to the cops.. And it's way cheaper then a dam valentine. 300 bucks may seem like a lot to pay.. but after I got my $270 ticket I said to myself "never again.."

I got a Cobra one for Christmas, but I didn't keep it long enough to actually find any cops with it. It was big and bright silver, and I was looking for something a little more stealth. I researched my way into a Bel Vector 940, which the UPS man should bring me tomorrow. It's very highly rated for the price (only $160 at SoundDomain vs. $200 at Circuit City), and even has upgradable software. I'll report back after I play with it and find me some fuzz.

Nothing beats the human eye...
Here in California the Highway Patrol doesn't use radars most of the time. They simply get in your blind spot and pace you...
No radar detector for me...

Valentine One is the best money can buy.....Saved me sooooo many tickets. Here is the deal nothing beats the arrows and bogy counter. The arrows tell you the direction that the cop is coming from and the bogy counter is amazing. Picture this you are going by a place that is an every day false alarm and your dectector goes off. With out the bogy counter you just keep going but today there is a cop there too and he bags you. Now if only you had the bogy counter. A second example is the speed traps cops setup. Your dectector goes off and you slow down and pass the first cop only to speed up again and bam there is another one that nabs you....Good luck with whatever you decide but I have had nothing but good come from the Valentine One

I have a Bel-Tronics 975R, the sensors are mounted in the rear and front bumper and the display is mounted on my dash. I dont like radar dectors that you have to plug into your cig. lighter. Id much rather have mine hard-wired right into my car.

I definitely plan on hardwiring my Bel when I get it. Not just because the cord gets in the way, but I'll feel better about leaving it in the car for short periods without the big advertisement running from my visor down to the console.
