ebay mod chip upgrade
ebay mod chip upgrade
This is a question about the mod chip upgrade that is being sold on ebay right now. Has anyone bought/installed it on their car? I've heard both good and bad things about it. From what I understand it is simply a resistor from radio shack. I don't know where and how it would be installed. I would also like to know if it would damage our cars engine. Any info is apprieciated, here is the link if you are interested, there are lots of them being sold right now. http://cgi.ebay.ca/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?MfcISAPICommand=ViewItem&item=290407 4540

[hr]Ever wonder why your car feels a little faster in cooler weather or before your car fully warms up? This is because your ECM reads incoming air temperature and creates it own pre-set fuel and timing curves. By tricking the ECM into thinking the air is colder it adds more fuel and advances the timing making more hp and torque. Horse Power Gain will depend on the size of engine and other modifications that may already have been done prior to installing. [hr]

It's a resistor that goes inline with the wire from the ATS (Air temperature sensor) and makes the ECU read the air temp as X degrees lower than it really is. That definitely will allow more ignition timing advance, as timing is retarted under hot coditions to prevent preignition knock. That's why this guy's stage 2 setup says it requires premium fuel. More advanced timing requires higher octane fuel to prevent knocking. Also premiium fuel itself can fool the knock sensor into allowing more timing advance.
The only problem with all this is that our ECU's have limits on how much timing advance or mixture enrichening is allowed under ANY circumstances. So there may be some gains, but maybe not as much as might be expected without the ECU limits.
OTOH, if you know the curve for the ATS, and want to offset it by a certain amount, you can add your own resistor for less than $1.
When you get down to it, if you're going to do some heavy mods and need more timing advance and richer fuel/air mix, then goig to a AFC or Jet chip, which gives the ECU wider parameters is the only way to get real gains.

If your car is stock, then this is a total waste of money. The air temp sensor is only taking readings of air. It then allows the ecu to adjust everything to maximize horsepower and more importantly efficiency. Fooling the sensor is not really going to add anything, but it could prove disasterous if the temp is miscalculated too low and the vehicle starts knocking.
Save your cash for real mods like an exhaust and intake. Then if you want more, buy a turbo, get a new programmable ecu and do it right.
Nothing in life is free. Cheap, Fast, or Reliable. Pick two, cause that is all you are ever going to get.
