What if you remote start your car and some little kid gets in there and drives off and runs into other cars?

Yep, well if you use your remote to start the car, there's a good chance you'll unlock the door. Besides, the kid could have a slim jim.

Come to think of it, I've noticed I can't lock my doors with the engine running.

with remote starters, after you start the car with the remote, you still have to put the key in the ignition or the car will die out. so you cant really steal the car without the key.

no one can steal your car if u remote start it you need to put the key into the ignition and turn it just like youd start a car normally. and its disengaged by hitting the break. and when u have an auto, u have to hit the break before u can put the car in any gear. so its still really safe and no ones gonna steal your car.

for all? im not sure. but the remote start i have on my lexus, Viper 550 ESP, it will automaticly shut off your engine when:
1. car alarm goes off
2. brake is applied
3. when rpm exceeds 2000RPM.

i would personally go with DEI products for alarms. ebay has a bunch of remote start systems that are made from CrimeStoppers. i hear the quality is crap. you can probably buy a reputable brand such as DEI for about $200. you may save around $60 bucks on the cheap brand.. but you pay for what you get

the viper alarm also will work on a manual. i use to have that in my truck. whenever you touched any switch on the vehicle it shut off. you have to actually put the key in the ignition to move the vehicle. i have now an aladin remote start that will work on manuals as well....and you can leave them in gear. but the aladin is a bit big for an alarm but it shows you where your car was tampered with as well as if you locked it or not. it also has a timer so you can set your car to start at a certain time each day. the only thing i like better about the viper is that it would turn the air on too so when i got in the truck it was blowing AC in the summer or nice and toastie in the winter. but im kinda thinking the people that put in the new one didnt do it right. im sure this one can do that too. now i just need to get one for my civic

CORRECT!!

Also, I'm considering getting one...and I'm pretty sure I want one by DEI. But I can't tell what the difference is between them all...the Viper, Clifford, etc. I know with the remote I want to be able to control the following:

Alarm (duh)
Lock/Unlock
Windows
Trunk Release
Remote Start

I know a couple of their models offer all of these, so which one do I get? Thanx.

I had an Avital in my old car. Which is made by DEI. Wasnt bad. But now the same install person that I am going to with my Civic, doesnt sell the Avital's anymore because he said they were crap. So I might be a little warey of the Avital. Im probably getting a 2-way model. Prestige. Its got some cool features. Other the other one is Autostart. They have a website. Autostart.ca Im still deciding.
Edit: my old remote also had a pin switch for the hood. If the hood was opened when the car was remote started, the car would die out. Good ones have Anti-grind, the pin switch, RPM Moniter, so if the RPM's go too high, the car shuts off, if you step on the brake with out the, the car also dies.

but won't a remote start thingy make the functionality of the engine immobilizer useless? you need to put in the transponder chip somewhere near the ingition for remote starter to work right? so basically, the car's immobilizer will be permanently off with a remote start?

Nope. The shop I am going to has an over ride kit for the chip thing. I wondered that also. More is explained Here
Edit: I forgot to mention when I was at my shop last week he said that they just did an install on a new CRV, and the override chip worked flawlessly. The person also came back into the shop and said it worked great, the one without the key. I trust my installer, he worked at a audio shop for about 10 years, and for the last 4 has been doing installs of remote starts, alarms, cruise controls, all sort of other electical stuff. He does really good work, he takes pride in his work. He also installed my OEM fogs for my car, and only charged me 60 bucks labor.

I just had the Viper Responder alarm installed on my car (with the two way LCD pager thing). For the remote start you need to have a bypass and give them a key to hook up to it so the immobilizer does not work. As the previous posts said, you can remote start the car, and the doors remain locked until you unlock them. And if someone breaks into your car I believe the alarm shuts the car off and if you hit the break the car shuts off so it is still really hard to steal the car.

BTW if anyone is wondering, I really really like the Viper Responder alarm thing

Outside its several hundred feet (I dont know the specs on what it can be).
You can get an external antenna and its supposed to extend it to 1500 feet (1/4 of a mile)

Through buildings though it gets very limited. But still inside the building I still see a range of probably 200+ feet.

People People.....let me clear things up.....
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FOR MANUAL TRANSMISSION:
Pros:
(1) Walk into a warm or cool setting....depending on how you preset the switches
(2) Good to warm car up for atleast 10 mins prior to using...gas efficiency
(3) Will turn off car if brake is applied
(4) Scare the fawk out of the neighbor who is walking the dog

Cons:
(1) Illegal
(2) Requires a bypass key and module for all models 2000 & up.
(3) The module is hidden within the console resulting in poor range
(4) If left in gear...the car will jump the e-brake, stall the car, and fly forward couple yards
(5) My EVO and Injen is so loud when I turn it on so it activates the sensitive alarm
(6) If an enemy knows you have remote starter....he might be able to take out the bypass key to steal car
.....(not proven yet)
