HondaWerx - Engine Heater
Hey, I searched, but couldnt find anything about this.
I was wondering if somebody (or Greg himself) could tell me about the Engine Heater that he sells for $31. Aside from what the obvious answer would be, is there something extra to this, and what advantages would there be for having one. Just curious...especially since there's also no picture. Thanx.

uummmmmmm, to keep the engine warm maybe, on those cold night especially. the plus side to this, not having to wait for the car to warm up at 5 am in 10 degree weather.

warms the engine up in cold weather for easier starting...cause when metal gets cold, it contracts, and it makes the cylinders smaller (by a VERY small amount) and makes it harder to turn over..

It sounds like it would ve fairly helpful. I don't understand if it's inexpensive, why people don't buy it. Also, what controls it, or does it just turn on when you start the car?

Most of them are heated dipsticks. Heats up the oil. Makes it less viscous. That's one reason why we have 5W20 oil. That means the oil acts like 5 weight when cold, but holds a 20 weight when hot. But when it gets really cold that oil can be really thick and makes hard to turn the engine fast enough to start. That wears down bateries.
Contrary to what one guy said about cylinders contracting, it's the oil thickness when cold that is the problem.
In the olden days, before multi weight oils, we used to change to light weight oil in winter and back to heavier weight in summer.
